How to fix iPhone X screen issue: screen glitches after installing iOS 12

Welcome to our latest iPhone X (#iPhoneX) troubleshooting article. iOS updates sometimes bring both good and bad things. In today’s short article, we’ll show one of the cases where updates can lead to problems. We are not saying that you should avoid installing updates at all. iPhones are very complicated and there are millions of possible points of failure. Developers can’t anticipate all problems so bugs may sometimes occur after overhauling an iPhone’s software environment. This post also covers some other issues that are not directly attributed by users to updates. We hope you’ll find this post helpful.

Before we proceed let us remind you that you can contact us by using the link provided at the bottom of this page. When describing your issue, please be as detailed as possible so we can easily pinpoint a relevant solution. If you can, kindly include the exact error messages you are getting to give us an idea where to start. If you have already tried some troubleshooting steps before emailing us, make sure to mention them so we can skip them in our answers.

Below are specific topics we’re bringing for you today:

Problem #1: How to fix iPhone X screen issue: screen glitches after installing iOS 12

My iphone x has a glitching screen for two months now. It had not fallen. I just updated it to IOS 12 last night and it didn’t fix the problem. It goes back to normal and then glitch again. I always restart at it but it didn’t help a lot also. How can i fix it?

Solution: We really can’t picture out the exact problem if you just tell us that the screen is glitching. You should have provided better description.

iPhone screens are generally reliable and can work for years if taken care of. If you’re positive that the phone was never dropped, exposed to water, moisture or extreme temperature, then it’s probably defective. The defect may be there when the unit was released from the factory.

To check if you have a hardware issue, try to wipe the phone by resetting its software information to defaults. Here’s how:

  1. Create a backup of your personal data to iTunes or iCloud.
  2. Open Settings app.
  3. Tap General.
  4. Tap Reset.
  5. Tap Erase All Content and Settings.
  6. If prompted, enter your passcode.
  7. Tap Erase iPhone.
  8. Set your phone up as a new device instead of using a backup. While in this newly wiped state, observe the phone for a few hours to see if there’s a difference. If the screen continues to glitch (whatever that means for you), contact Apple support.

Problem #2: iPhone X becomes unresponsive at night when alarm is enabled

I have a brand new apple iphone x. It just recently updated to iOS 11.4.1. At night time I put the phone down next to me to be an alarm. After a couple of hours it will become black and unresponsive. I have to force reset to get it back working. I use it as an alarm and every night it does this. I’ve done a factory restore, I’ve done reset settings, I’ve tried everything. I have not dropped it nor do I have water damage. This only happens at night when I go to bed. I need the phone to stay on hence I use as an alarm. Any solutions? kt

Solution: Your iPhone may have developed a system bug. Such situation can occur for a number of reasons. Because there’s no way to know for sure where the problem lies, you should do a number of troubleshooting steps to narrow down the factors.

Install updates

Both apps and operating system (iOS) need regular updates to remove bugs and bring new changes. We understand that the device’s software was recently updated so there’s a chance that the issue may actually be coming from one of the apps you install. Some app bugs are fixed by changing their codes only so be sure that all of them are running their latest patch. Your iPhone should automatically download and install app updates but if you change this setting before, be sure regularly check for updates at this time.

Uninstall apps

Unlike Android devices, iPhones running stock firmware can’t boot to safe mode so there’s no way to check if one of your apps is causing this problem. The most that you can do to check if there’s an app issue is by trial-and-error. If the problem occured recently and after installing an app, that new app may be to blame. Try to uninstall it, observe the phone, and see if the problem occurs without it.

If you did not install any app recently at all, you may have to spend more energy and time to resolve the issue. In this case, you want to uninstall the most likely app that may cause this trouble. Start with apps that are designed to change or modify the look and feel of the user interface or sound. Personalization apps are relatively powerful as they have access to deeper OS functions in order to implement changes. If you have a lot of such apps, uninstall them one by one. Be sure to observe the phone for a few hours after each uninstall. This should give you enough time to notice any difference, if there’s any.

Set the phone as a new device

Another way to fix the problem is to wipe the phone (factory reset) and set it up as a new device. You can refer to our suggestion for Problem #1 on how to go about this.

Problem #3: How to fix iPhone X wifi issue: wifi keeps disconnecting

My iPhone X is working on my home WiFi and everything seems fine but all of a sudden the WiFi cuts off. There is no error code or anything, I only know it cuts off because whatever I’m on that uses data just stalls or buffers and doesn’t go any further. The phone still shows that it’s connected to the WiFi. I have to turn the WiFi off and then back on (just the WiFi button on my phone) then it will all connect again. This will not last long until it all does it again. No other device in the house does this so that proves that the router in the house is fine. I have tried resetting network settings, that didn’t work. I also have just updated the iOS to iOS 12 and it still doesn’t work.

Solution: Like in most iPhone issues, there’s no easy way to know if this problem is being caused by a new update you installed, or if it’s by something else. If a network reset proved useless, then you can try a more drastic solution such as restoring from an old backup. The current set of apps or configuration may be interfering with your device’s wifi function. The best to know that is by bringing your phone back to its older software state. If you have a backup created before iOS 12 update, or a few weeks back, try to use that and see if there’s any difference. Below are the general steps on how to restore your iPhone X:

  1. Connect your iPhone to your computer with the cable that came with your phone.
  2. We assume you remember your phone’s passcode so simply enter it when you’re prompted for it.
  3. Select your iPhone once iTunes asks you for the specific device.
  4. Once you’re in the Summary panel or screen, select the option that will restore your device (Restore).
  5. Confirm by clicking on Restore button.
  6. Wait for a few moments while iTunes restores your device to its factory settings. It may also take some time if iTunes will need to install an updated operating system version.
  7. After this factory reset, all software settings should be restored to their defaults.

You can also wipe the software by doing a factory reset instead. This will ensure that you get rid of all new settings and parameters that may contributing to the problem. Refer to the steps above on how to factory reset your iPhone X.

If that fails to fix the issue either, we suggest that you report this bug to Apple so they can either create a ticket for it, or update the current one (if some people are experiencing the problem as well).

Problem #4: iPhone X camera shows black screen

The rear camera on my iPhone X is not functioning correctly. When I open up the native camera app, it shows up as a black screen. However when I open up 3rd party apps such as light room or the open camera through Facebook messenger, one of the rear camera works. I get a zoomed in image of what ever is facing my rear camera. Perhaps one of the lense is working? This doesn’t happen with all 3rd party camera apps though. Only through the 2 apps I’ve mentioned before. The front camera works fine. Also, the flash doesn’t work anymore and I get the message saying the flash is too hot and it needs to cool down, but I’ve not been able to use the flash for about a month now.

Solution: Looks like you have a malfunctioning camera. This one is most probably hardware-related since you’re getting an overheating error for the flash as well. Try to factory reset your device and see what happens. If the camera remains problematic after a factory reset, that’s a sign that the issue is not software at all. Call Apple so you can set up repair or replacement appointments.
