How to troubleshoot iPhone X that’s not responding and has a black screen?

As long as your device doesn’t have any signs of physical and/or liquid damage and this problem occurred, you can still fix it. However, if there are signs of physical or liquid damage, you should bring it back to the Apple store so that a technician can check it up for you. There’s no point in troubleshooting a problem that you can’t fix on your own.

Assuming the physical state of the iPhone X is still good, then here are the things you can do…

Perform Forced Reboot

Every iPhone X user should learn how to do this procedure because most of the time the problems you actually encounter with your iPhone are pretty minor and can easily be fixed by it. Your iPhone X should reboot or boot up like it normally does but its memory will be refreshed and all apps and services reloaded. That’s why it’s very effective because even a firmware crash can be fixed by it. Here’s how you do it…

  1. Press and quickly release the Volume Up button.
  2. Press and quickly release the Volume Down button.
  3. Press and hold the Side/Power button until the Apple logo appears.

Usually if your it’s a firmware crash, it would take about 20 seconds or longer for you to press on these buttons until you will see the Apple logo on the screen. So just keep pressing on the buttons until your iPhone system finally boots up.

Allow iPhone X to charge for a while

Here’s the thing, if you found your iPhone X being unresponsive and won’t turn on in the morning, it’s possible the battery got completely drained. The thing about it is that battery drain issue may lead to a firmware crash and when this happens, you’ll already be dealing with a couple of issues that will both result to an unresponsive device. To address this, try the following steps…

  1. Plug the charger to a working wall outlet.
  2. Connect your iPhone X to its charger.
  3. Regardless whether it responds or not, allow it to charge for 10 minutes, at least.
  4. Press and quickly release the Volume Up button.
  5. Press and quickly release the Volume Down button.
  6. Press and hold the Side/Power button until the Apple logo appears.

Try connecting your phone to a computer

You need to do this to know if the iPhone X is still powered on and the problem is with the display. It’s very much possible that there’s an issue with the screen and if this is the case, the computer should be able to detect the device even if the screen is powered off.

Now, regardless whether the computer detects your iPhone or not, you still have to bring the device to the shop or Apple store so that a technician can check it up for. Because assume the computer detects it, you can’t do anything about a broken screen unless you dissect your device. If the computer can’t detect it, well then, there could be a problem with the hardware.

For those who want to try to restore their iPhone X (if your computer or Mac can detect it), you can follow these steps:

  1. Close any running programs on your computer. Doing so will prevent any of the running programs to interrupt the DFU mode restore process.
  2. Connect your iPhone to your computer using the Apple-supplied USB connector or Lightning cable.
  3. While your phone is connected, press and hold the Side/Power button for about 3 seconds.
  4. Keep pressing on the Side/Power button then press and hold the Volume Down button for about 10 seconds. If the Apple logo appears, it means you’ve held the buttons too long and that you’ll have to start all over again.
  5. If you see no logo, release the Side/Power button but keep holding the Volume Down button for another 5 seconds.
  6. If the screen stays black afterwards, it means that you have successfully entered DFU mode. At this point, you will be prompted with an alert message on your computer saying that iTunes has detected your iPhone. If you see that message, follow the onscreen prompts to complete the DFU mode recovery process.
  7. If you see the Plug into iTunes screen, it means you haven’t entered DFU mode and that you will need to start all over again.
