While most people have found benefit from updating iOS, others ended up having problems instead. This can happen because not all devices are configured in the same way. Some people might have enabled certain options that eventually caused conflict with the new platform. As a result, post-update errors occur, and their iPhones are misbehaving. Among the most prevalent post-update problems encountered by iPhone owners is overheating. It has been an issue since the first iOS release up until the latest iOS version 11.3.1.
Nonetheless, it doesn’t always occur to all. Apparently, it is a software issue and therefore can be resolved at home. To give you some inputs, I’ve managed to compile a rundown of suggested workarounds and generic procedures to troubleshoot and fix an iPhone 7 that is overheating after installing new iOS update. First solution: Reboot your iPhone 7 (soft reset).
A device would typically heat up when installing new update especially if the update file is too big. The bigger the file size is, the longer it would take for the processor to complete the download and installation process. This means more workloads for the processor to carry out. When the processor gets exhausted, the device heats up. Unless your iPhone gets extremely warm, just allow it to finish updating. - Alternatively, you can do a force restart on your iPhone 7 by pressing and holding on the Power and Volume Down buttons simultaneously for about 20 to 30 seconds and then release both buttons when the Apple logo appears.
It’s a simulated battery removal procedure that works the same as a soft reset. Doing so forces all apps to close and the iOS to shutdown. Any software glitches that might have caused your device to misbehave will likewise be remedied.
Second solution: Manage and remove rogue apps.
Some apps, especially third-party apps may tend to become erratic after a new iOS platform is implemented. To get started, connect your iPhone to your computer using the supplied Lightning cable. Then open iTunes on your computer and wait until it recognizes your iPhone.
While your device is connected, force it to restart with these steps:
- Press and hold the Side/Power button and Volume Down button simultaneously. Don’t release the buttons when the Apple logo appears, instead keep holding them until you see the Connect to iTunes screen.
- When you’re prompted with the option to Update or Restore, select Restore.
- Follow the onscreen prompts to continue.
- Wait until iTunes is finished reinstalling iOS and downloads the software for your device.
If the download takes more than 15 minutes, your iPhone exits recovery mode. When this happens, just wait until the download is finished and then enter recovery mode again.
Once the Restore is finished, you can proceed with the initial setup process.
Fifth solution: Restore your iPhone 7 in DFU mode.
When nothing else is working, you may still continue to troubleshoot your iPhone and try your luck in a DFU mode restore. It puts your iPhone in a state where it’s still able to communicate with iTunes on a computer but without activating the bootloader or iOS. Here’s how it’s done:
- Close any open apps on your computer then connect your iPhone using the supplied USB cable or Lightning cable.
- Open iTunes on your computer. Make sure you’re using the latest version of iTunes to prevent system conflicts.
- Press and hold the Power button and Volume Down button simultaneously for 8 seconds.
- After the elapsed time, release the Power button but keep holding the Volume Down button for a few seconds more.
- Release the Volume Down button when iTunes prompts you with the “iTunes has detected an iPhone in recovery mode…” message.
Your iPhone screen will then become completely black. This means you’ve successfully entered DFU mode. You can now restore your iPhone in iTunes.
If you failed to enter DFU mode like when you see any logo instead of black screen after the last step, try again from the very start until you finally entered DFU mode.
Seek more help
- Contact your carrier or Apple Support. Report the issue to your carrier’s technical help desk or Apple support for further troubleshooting assistances and recommendations. Doing so will likewise allow them to assess the problem and determine if it’s due to an update bug that requires a new update containing fix patch.
- Ask an Apple technician’s aid. While the problem started after installing a new software update, it doesn’t rule hardware issues out from the underlying causes.
