Fix for iPhone 6 apps in waiting mode after an update issue, Tumblr app won’t work, other issues

Problem 1: Fix for iPhone 6 apps in waiting mode after an update issue

iPhone 6…downloaded iOS 10. Had to delete a bunch of stuff to make room. Well I have 4 apps stuck in waiting mode. I can’t delete or remove them. I have rebooted, I have signed off Apple Store apps and re-signed on. I have done everything told to me and they are still stuck. One is a Papa John app. One is a credit card wallet app, one is a Polaroid zip app which I need to make my printer work! The last is Ann envelope generator size app. Could you please help me?! Thank you. — Bonepurple

Solution: Hi Bonepurple. Sometimes, updates can take a long time to install, especially if there’s a problem with remaining storage. The most likely reason why some of your apps are currently in waiting state is lack or total absence of available storage space to accommodate them. Other factors that can come into play in this scenario includes network issues, or other apps running in the background.

To fix this problem, below are the steps that you must do.

Ensure that there’s more than enough storage space left before installing an update

It can sometimes become tricky to know how much storage space a system needs to allow installation and updates of all apps to proceed without a hitch.  For this reason, we suggest that you always make it a habit of making sure that you have at least around 2GB of remaining storage space before doing any major iOS upgrade. Keep in mind that iOS updates usually bring with them updates for apps too so having this much storage space left should be about right.

Try to get rid of easily replaceable files such as photos and music by moving them to iTunes or iCloud. Once you’ve cleared enough storage space, try to redownload the apps.

Reboot your device with hardware buttons

This simple yet effective troubleshooting step can do wonders so never skip it. To do it properly, simply follow these steps:

  1. Press and hold the Power and Home buttons until the screen turns black.
  2. Once the Apple logo appears, release the buttons.
  3. Wait for the device to reboot.

Check the network

If a soft reset above won’t help fix the problem and same set of apps remain in waiting mode or state, the next thing that you want to do is to ensure that you are connected in a stable, or strong internet network. If you are using mobile data to download the updates, consider switching to a known, fast wifi. A lot of cases like yours are caused by weak, unstable internet connection.

If necessary, try to delete the partially downloaded app or simply stop the current update. Once you’ve connected to a good wifi network, resume the download.

To delete a partially downloaded app, simply tap an item in the “waiting” list and tap on Delete App. This will allow you redownload the same app after clearing enough memory or after rebooting your iPhone.

Close apps running in the background

Some users were able to confirm in some cases before that closing background apps fixed the problem similar to yours. While there’s no logical explanation that we can provide why this may work, it’s still worth doing a try. We know that too many running apps in the background can swamp a phone’s resources but it should not be enough to prevent installation of apps. Still, it can be done safely and quickly so why not give it a chance, right? Simply tap the Home button twice (double press it) to launch the multitask switcher and close everything that runs in the background.

Install apps via iTunes

If you’ve already done all the steps above and still apps won’t install, consider installing them via iTunes and using the Sync function later on. You can do this by organizing your apps by creating folders in iTunes first. To create  an apps folder in iTunes, follow these steps:

  1. Connect your device to your computer.
  2. Click the device button, then click Apps.
  3. On the Home screen, drag an app on top of another. A new folder is created, containing both apps. If you want, type a name for the folder.
  4. Do any of the following:
    • Add apps to a folder: Drag them to the folder.
    • Open a folder: Double-click it.
    • Close a folder: Click outside the folder.
    • Remove an app from a folder: Open the folder, and then drag the app to any Home screen.
    • Rearrange the apps in a folder: Drag the apps to where you want them to appear.
    • Change a folder’s name: Open the folder you want to rename, double-click the folder’s name, and type in a new name.

After you’ve created the folder, download the apps you’re having problems with  to iTunes. Once you’ve done that, you can then sync your device with your computer. Here’s how:

  1. Connect your iPhone 6 to your computer.
  2. Click the device button, then click Apps.
  3. Click Install next to the apps you want to sync.
    • Drag apps from the list on the left to the Home screen on the right.
    • Arrange your device’s Home screens by double-clicking a screen and dragging app icons to where you want them to appear.
  4. Click Apply.

Problem 2: iPhone 6 Tumblr app won’t work after an update

Since I’ve updated my iPhone 6 to the iOS 10.0.2, I have the Tumblr app icon that has greyed out. I’ve tried everything to sort this issue out apart from a complete factory reset. Holding until the x appears, click delete, Soft reboot, reset all settings but still have this issue. Not sure if it’s using my data up or how to get rid would like to get it sorted as it’s winding me up please help. — Mark Phillips

Solution: Hi Mark. If you’ve already tried to re-install the app after you’ve deleted it, there may be an unknown operating system bug that causes it. We’re afraid you really have not much choice at this time except to do a full restore. To do that, here are the steps:

  1. Create a backup of your files. You can do that in a number of ways but the fastest and most effective way is by using iTunes in your PC or Mac. If you don’t want to create a backup at all, you can simply erase everything on the phone by following the steps in this link.
  2. Connect your iPhone to your computer with the cable that came with your phone.
  3. We assume you remember your phone’s passcode so simply enter it when you’re prompted for it.
  4. Select your iPhone once iTunes asks you for the specific device.
  5. Once you’re in the Summary panel or screen, select the option that will restore your device (Restore).
  6. Confirm by clicking on Restore button.
  7. Wait for a few moments while iTunes restores your device to its factory settings. It may also take some time if iTunes will need to install an updated operating system version.
  8. After this factory reset, all software settings should be restored to their defaults.

Tumblr app is a third party app so if it still will fail to work following a full restore, contact the developer for support. To do that, visit the download page of Tumblr in the App Store.

  1. Open the App Store app.
  2. Find the app in the App Store.
  3. Tap the app, then tap Reviews.
  4. Underneath App Store Customer Reviews, tap App Support.

Problem 3: iPhone 6 WhatsApp app won’t load, can’t delete WhatsApp

Hello, I downloaded Whatsapp on my phone about 6 months ago, and now it suddenly the app icon is dark and won’t allow me to open the app. It initially said “Waiting” under the app, but now it says “Whatsapp,” but won’t open the app. When I hold down the app, it won’t delete. I’ve tried every solution that I could find on google, and nothing has worked, from connecting my phone to my computer, to a soft reset, to going through various settings on my phone to try to get the app to install all the way. I haven’t done a total reset to restore my phone to the original settings, I’m trying to avoid that. But I need this app to work, and I haven’t been able to figure out any solution, so any help would be very much appreciated. Thank you. — Eavoirin

Solution: Hi Eavoirin. Your issue appears similar to the first two issues discussed in this post. Make sure that you read our suggestions for both Bonepurple and Mark above.

Also, if you’ve having difficulty in deleting an app by tapping and holding it down until it wiggles, there are other ways to remove it from the system.

  • Delete an app via Settings. This is done by going under Settings > General > Storage & iCloud Usage. Once you’re under Storage, tap Manage Storage. The app you’re trying to get rid of might be under Used and Available listings so check on that first. Then, tap the app and tap Delete App option to erase it.
  • Delete an app from iTunes library. This option is more drastic than the first two things you’ve tried as it will entirely purge the app from your Apple account. However, it’s okay in this case since you’re dealing with a free WhatsApp app. Simply go to iTunes and select your Apps library. Once you’re in there, look for the app and select it. After that, hit the Delete key. When asked to confirm, just proceed.

Any of these methods should help you fix the problem but if you’ll continue to encounter an issue, consider doing a full restore. Refer to the steps above on how to do it.
