Face ID Stopped Working on iPhone 12? Here are the fixes!

In this troubleshooting guide, we will show what to do if Face ID stopped working on your iPhone 12. You have to consider all possibilities and rule them out one by one until you can determine the cause and be able to fix the problem. Read on to learn more.

When a core feature like Face ID stops working, it’s tempting to think that there’s a problem with the firmware, however, it’s possible that it’s caused by other factors. You need to do some basic troubleshooting before doing some procedures that might delete some important data on your device. With that being said, here’s what you should do:

First solution: Clean the front camera

The Face Unlock feature requires the front-facing camera to be fully working to scan your face. If there are smudges on the lens, it may not be able to scan your face properly. So the first thing you have to do is make sure the front camera is clear.

Get a clean and dry cloth and wipe the screen with it, especially the top part of the display where the camera is located. If you have a microfiber cloth, that would be better in cleaning the screen.

After making sure the screen is clean, try to see if the Face ID is now working.

Second solution: Force restart your iPhone

If the Face ID feature has been working properly until this problem started, then it’s possible that it’s just due to a minor firmware glitch. Some services may have crashed and affected your iPhone’s performance. So try refreshing your device’s memory by doing the Forced Restart. It will also reload all services. Here’s how:

  1. Quickly press and release the Volume Up, and then the Volume Down buttons.
  2. Immediately after that, press and hold the Power key for 10 seconds. This will trigger your iPhone to shut down and power back up.
  3. Once the apple logo shows, release the Power key and wait until the boot process is finished.

After the restart, unlock your device using your screen lock, and then lock it again and try unlocking it using Face ID.

Third solution: Reset Face ID

After cleaning the front camera and doing the forced restart and Face Unlock is still not working, then it’s possible that the Face ID data is corrupted. At this point, it’s better to reset the feature and then set it up properly. Here’s how you do that:

  1. From the Home screen, launch Settings.
  2. Find and tap Face ID and Passcode.
  3. If prompted, enter your screen lock.
  4. Now tap Reset Face ID.
  5. Tap Set Up Face ID and then follow on-screen instructions to set it up again.

If you’ve successfully set it up, then the problem should be fixed by now. After all, these procedures are enough to fix a minor problem like this.

However, if the problem persists or occurs again, then move on to the next solution.

Fourth solution: Reset all the settings on your iPhone

After doing the first three solutions and your iPhone 12 is still not able to make Face ID work again, then it’s time to reset all the settings. This will bring all the settings of your device back to their default values. If this problem is just due to some settings that were changed, then it should fix it. Here’s how you do that:

  1. From the Home screen, launch Settings.
  2. Find and tap General.
  3. Scroll down and then tap Reset.
  4. Tap Reset all settings.
  5. If needed, enter your screen lock.
  6. Tap Reset all settings at the bottom of the screen.
  7. Tap reset all settings once again to confirm.

After the reboot, try to see if the Face ID feature is now working properly.

Fifth solution: Make sure the firmware is updated

Most of the time, if a problem with a core feature isn’t fixed with the previous solutions, it’s an issue with the firmware and you might not be the only one that’s having such a problem. It’s often fixed by Apple by rolling out an update. So the next thing you need to do is make sure your iPhone 12 runs on the latest iOS version.

  1. To do so, launch Settings.
  2. Find and tap General.
  3. Tap Software Update. Your iPhone will connect to the servers and scan for a new update.
  4. If there’s an update available, download and install it.

If not, then move on to the next solution.

Sixth solution: Factory reset your iPhone

As long as it’s not an issue with the hardware, the Face ID that’s not working properly should be a firmware problem. Thus, a reset should be able to fix it. However, before you reset your iPhone, make sure to backup your important files and data.

When ready, follow these steps to reset your iPhone 12:

  1. From the Home screen, tap Settings.
  2. Find and tap General.
  3. Scroll down to the bottom of the screen, and then touch Reset.
  4. Tap Erase All Contents and Settings.
  5. Tap Erase Now.
  6. If prompted, enter your security lock.
  7. Tap Erase iPhone at the bottom of the screen.
  8. Tap Erase iPhone again to proceed.
  9. Now enter your Apple ID password, and then tap Erase to proceed with the reset.
  10. Wait until your iPhone has finished the reset, and then set it up as a new device.

If Face ID still doesn’t work after the factory reset, then set up an appointment at the Genius bar and have your phone checked.

And that’s what you need to do if Face ID stopped working on your iPhone 12. We hope that this simple troubleshooting guide can help you one way or the other.
