With Apple TV+ going official over the weekend, not many people have commented on the quality of streaming offered by Apple. Well, that changes today with a forum post on FlatpanelsHD by Rasmus Larsen which clears the air on some questions we might have on Apple TV+. Larsen mentions that Apple TV+ has the highest 4K streaming quality of all services thanks to a variable bitrate used by the company.
Bitrates were measured for shows like See, The Elephant Queen, Snoopy In Space, and Dickinson. Particularly, See recorded the highest bitrate at 29 Mb/s on average and 41 MB/s at its peak. The Elephant Queen, on the other hand, tiptoed around the 26 Mb/s mark, which again is fairly decent compared to competitors like Netflix which in comparison only offers a bitrate of 15 Mb/s.
Apple has made multiple adjustments to its new streaming service to make sure it runs smoothly across all compatible devices. The aforementioned changes could very well be the result of 4K Dolby Vision which is default across all Apple TV+ content. It’s worth pointing out that Snoopy In Space also sees a decent bitrate despite being an animated series.
While Apple offers excellent video quality by default, there’s no denying that you can significantly enhance your viewing experience on compatible televisions and speakers. The audio quality has also received a boost for Apple TV+ thanks to Dolby Atmos compatibility, although this may require separate speakers.
Apple TV+ is priced at $4.99 per month while customers who bought an iPad or iPhone since September 2019 can enjoy the subscription free for 1 year at no additional cost.
