Before you insert and remove the SIM card on the phone, make sure that the device is completely powered off. This is highly recommended to prevent damaging the SIM card or phone itself.

  1. Once your iPhone XR is already powered off, get a small paper clip or the SIM eject tool that came with your phone.
  2. Next, locate the SIM tray on the right edge of your iPhone XR device.
  3. Insert the SIM eject tool or the paper clip into the small hole.
  4. Slightly push to unlock the tray until it pops out.
  5. Pull the tray out to access the SIM card slot.
  6. Remove the SIM card from the tray. Check and ensure that there are no signs of physical or liquid damage on the SIM card.
  7. If everything looks good, place the SIM card back into the card slot. Be sure to position it in the same orientation before you removed it. When inserting the SIM card, make sure that the cut of the SIM card aligns and fits the tray.
  8. Once the SIM card is secured in place, slowly push the tray back into the side of your phone.
  9. Make sure that the SIM tray is locked to prevent dust and liquid from entering the phone.

Once everything is back in place, you can turn the phone back on and wait for it to detect the SIM card.

Removing and reinstalling the SIM card is also one of the recommended solutions to SIM-card related issues in iPhones and iPad devices with cellular support. This however should not be done more often as it can also cause physical damage to SIM card or other relevant components, especially when done improperly.

What and how SIM cards work?

Most of our smartphones today are powered by 4G LTE network and with the majority utilizing  SIM cards. The SIM card carries a unique identification number of the owner, saved personal data, and makes phone operational. Most SIM Cards can be transferable from one phone to another, depending on the user’s carrier network.

One of the advantages of using a SIM card on our phone is being able to transfer saved data to other phones. If you are also getting a new phone and wanted to keep the same phone number, all you need to do is to insert the SIM card to the new phone. Though this option will vary on different network carriers, but as long as you are not locked into any contract; then you are good to go.

Some carriers are now gradually rolling out eSIMs as alternative to tangible SIM cards. The eSIM is digitally stored on the handset and requires a manual activation, while the nano SIM card can be used by directly inserting it into the phone. To know more about eSIMs and how to switch from regular SIM cards to an eSIM, contact your service provider/carrier.
