How to fix iOS 13 no sound problem on your iPhone XS, audio not working after iOS update

Audio problems in mobile devices are often due to faulty hardware. However, relevant symptoms can also be tied to some software issues. Just like what happens to some iPhone XS handsets, in which the audio or sound outputs are suddenly not audible after updating to iOS 13. In this case, the problem is most likely from within the software given that it instigated from a system update. With that said, there are ways for this to be resolved by end-users at home. First solution: Flip the ringer switch back and forth.

Be sure not to miss looking into the very obvious possible reason as to why your iPhone has no sound. And that is the ring/mute switch on the side of your device. Although the problem started from the iOS 13 update installation, it doesn’t always mean that it’s triggered by an update bug. It’s possible that the ring/mute switch has been accidentally flipped and set to mute. Thus, you should check on that first. If you see the orange bar, that means that the switch is set to mute and that’s the reason why you hear no sound coming from your iPhone. To make sound outputs audible again, flip the switch up in the opposite direction to put your iPhone in ring mode. If the switch is already positioned to ring mode but your iPhone still has no sound, try flipping the switch back and forth to refresh audio functions. Make sure that the switch is set to ring mode.

Also try to adjust the volume level by pressing the Volume keys on the side of the phone. Set the volume to the highest level to see if that makes positive result. If not, then move on and try the next applicable solutions.

Second solution: Soft reset your iPhone to fix iOS 13 no sound problem.

Performing a soft reset or reboot after installing new apps and software updates is recommended to apply the recent system changes and to clear and refresh the internal memory. A device restart is also a way of dumping out junk files including temporary corrupted data that caused some conflicts to your iPhone’s audio functions after the system update. If you haven’t already, then you should reboot your iPhone or perform a soft reset through these steps:

  1. Press and hold the Side button and either Volume button for a few seconds and then release when the Power off slider appears.
  2. Then, drag the slider to turn your iPhone completely off.
  3. After 30 seconds, press and hold the Side button again until the Apple logo appears.

Wait for your phone to finish its boot sequence and then try loading up sound-enabled apps to check and see if the problem is gone.

Third solution: Disable Bluetooth on your iPhone.

You’re certain that Bluetooth was turned off before you update to iOS 13. But it isn’t a guarantee that it remains turned on after the update was installed. This is possible because some system updates are programmed to override settings on the receiving device automatically. If your iPhone is connected to a Bluetooth-enabled device, it won’t render any sound because the audio output is routed to its paired or connected device. To rule this out, manage your iPhone’s Bluetooth settings and make sure that it’s turned off. In iOS 13, there’s a new option for you to manage Bluetooth settings straight from the control center. Here’s how it’s done:

  1. Pull up the Control Center from any screen of your iPhone. To do this, simply swipe down from the top-right of any screen. Be sure to position your finger at the upper-rightmost corner of the screen to show the right of the notch then pull down to open the Control Center.
  2. Then long press on the four icon menu that comprises of Wi-Fi and Bluetooth. 
  3. Finally, long press on either Wi-Fi or Bluetooth controls to enable/disable the feature.

Or, you can also turn the Bluetooth switch off and on from the settings menu as you usually do. Just head over to Settings-> Bluetooth menu then turn the switch on and off again.

Forgetting all saved Bluetooth devices from your iPhone directory may also be necessary to prevent your phone from automatically connecting to an available Bluetooth device the moment it reboots.

Fourth solution: Turn DND off.

Do Not Disturb or DND is an iOS feature that is used to silence calls and alert notifications on your iPhone. When enabled, sound alerts for calls, text messages, email and app update notifications are turned off. Thus, you won’t hear your iPhone sound for these alerts, except for alarms. To ensure that this isn’t preventing your device from rendering sound, check your settings and turn off Do Not Disturb, if necessary. Just refer to these steps:

  1. Launch the Control Center on your iPhone by swiping down from the top-right corner of the display.
  2. Tap the crescent moon icon to turn Do Not Disturb Mode off.

Alternatively, you can disable the feature from your iPhone settings menu. Just follow these steps:

  1. Tap to launch the Settings app from your Home screen.
  2. Scroll to Do Not Disturb then toggle the switch next to it turn the feature OFF.

After making all these changes, try to open a sound-enabled app and see if the no sound problem is fixed already. If not, then you may have to perform some resets.

Fifth solution: Reset all settings on your iPhone.

To eliminate incorrect settings overrides from the recent iOS 13 update implementation, try to reset all settings on your iPhone. This will erase all your current settings configuration including automatic settings overrides from the iOS 13 update. It doesn’t affect any saved data on the internal memory, so you can carry this out without creating backups. Just follow these steps whenever you’re all set to reset your iPhone:

  1. Open the Settings app from the Home screen. 
  2. Tap General.
  3. Scroll down to and then select Reset
  4. Tap the Reset All Settings option.
  5. Enter your device passcode if prompted.
  6. Then tap to confirm all settings reset.

All settings are then restored to the original values. To use necessary features, particularly those that are disabled by default, you need to re-enable them individually.

Sixth solution: Erase your iPhone and restore its default settings.

If the previous reset doesn’t solve the problem, then you may have to consider performing a factory reset. This will erase everything from your iPhone system including post-update bugs and errors that are too tough to withstand the initial procedures. Before resetting, back up all your important data to iCloud otherwise, you will lose them permanently. After securing your iPhone backup, follow these steps to instigate a factory reset on your iPhone XS:

  1. Tap to launch the Settings app from the Home screen. 
  2. Tap General.
  3. Scroll down to and then select Reset
  4. Tap on the option to Erase all content and settings.
  5. Enter your device passcode if prompted.
  6. Then tap to confirm factory settings reset on your iPhone.

Your phone should reboot automatically when the reset is finished. By then you can proceed to the initial setup process. You can use the start-up wizard to set up your iPhone as new using automatic settings.

Is your iPhone XS still facing iOS 13 no sound problem?

The above procedures are usually good enough to deal with minor post-update bugs that might have ruined your iPhone’s sound functions. If none of them works and the no sound problem continues, your remaining options are as follows: 

  • Restore your iPhone from a previous iOS backup. Temporary solutions like using a previous firmware can also be considered among the last options. You can use iTunes to restore your iPhone XS from a previous iOS backup either through a recovery mode restore or DFU mode restore. This however can be deemed as a system downgrade since you will be switching back to a prior iOS version.
