How to troubleshoot iPhone XS Max with no Internet access?
Before troubleshooting, reboot your wireless router or modem in use. Like smartphones, routers and modems also experience random firmware crashes and when this happens, different symptoms will emerge on all connected devices. If all your devices are experiencing relevant Wi-Fi connectivity issue and they’re all connected to the same Wi-Fi network, then the problem is most likely on the wireless access point or the very source of Internet connection. That said, get to your router or modem then find the Power button/switch to turn it off. Wait until all the light indicators on your router/modem are off then unplug its AC adapter from the power source for at least 30 seconds. That should be enough time for the equipment to rest. After the elapsed time, plug it back in to the power source and then press the Power button to turn it back on. Wait until all the light indicators become stable. Allow your iPhone to reconnect to Wi-Fi and then try to see if you can already access the Internet this time. If you still can’t, then try these simple solutions to clear out software problems that may have prevented your iPhone XS Max from establishing Internet access as intended.
First solution: Toggle Wi-Fi off and then back on.
This could be just among other random glitches affecting the Wi-Fi feature of your iPhone. Should this be the underlying cause, turning Wi-Fi off and on can potentially clear out the glitches. So here’s what you can try doing as your first workaround:
- Launch the Settings app.
- Tap Wi-Fi.
- Tap the switch next to Wi-Fi to turn the feature off for a few seconds then tap the switch again to turn Wi-Fi back on.
Alternatively, you can also toggle the Airplane Mode switch on and off. Turning Airplane Mode on will disable Wi-Fi and other wireless features of your phone. To re-enable your phone’s wireless functions, simply turn Airplane mode off again. You can access Airplane Mode through the control center of your iPhone XS Max or from Settings-> Airplane Mode menu.
Second solution: Reboot your iPhone XS Max (soft reset).
Turning the phone’s wireless feature off and on may not be enough to completely void out random software errors affecting Wi-Fi. Thus, it’s possible to end having the same problem after performing the prior method. As your next possible solution, carry out a soft reset or reboot your iPhone XS Max with these steps:
- Press and hold the Side/Power button and either Volume Up or Down buttons simultaneously and then release both buttons when the Slide to Power Off menu appears.
- Drag the power off slider to turn off your iPhone completely.
- After about 30 seconds, press and hold the Side/Power button again until the Apple logo appears.
Allow your device to boot up completely and then reconnect to Wi-Fi. A system reboot does not only clear out minor software errors but also dump cache from the phone internal memory and likewise, refresh the operating system for better and smoother performance afterwards. And more importantly, it won’t result to data loss at it doesn’t affect any saved information on the phone.
Third solution: Forget Wi-Fi network then reconnect manually.
Corrupted Wi-Fi network can also be the main reason why your iPhone cannot access the Internet even when it’s already connected to Wi-Fi. While the network is still usable, it may no longer be able to work as intended and therefore needs to be deleted. After deleting the problematic Wi-Fi network, you can set it up manually then reconnect. Here’s how it’s done:
- Open the Settings app.
- Tap Wi-Fi.
- Tap the information icon (i) next to the Wi-Fi network you want to forget.
- Select the option to Forget This Network.
- If prompted, tap Forget to confirm deletion of the selected network.
After successfully deleting the Wi-Fi network, reboot your iPhone to dump cache from its memory and to refresh iOS. Then manually set up and reconnect to your Wi-Fi network with these steps:
- Open the Settings app.
- Tap Wi-Fi.
- Tap Other…
- Enter the exact name of the network.
- Select the preferred security settings. Among the usual options are WPA2, WEP, or None.
- Enter the network password, if applicable.
- Then tap Join.
Allow your phone to connect to the Wi-Fi network and then do some test browsing to see if you already have Internet access. Try to use different browser apps to make sure that the problem isn’t isolated to your browser app in use. Some browsers may not be able to browse websites due to some restrictions, so make sure this isn’t what’s causing your trouble.
Fourth solution: Reset network settings on your iPhone XS Max.
For more complex network errors that may have halted your device from having Internet access after connecting to the Wi-Fi network, resetting the network settings is usually the key to fixing the problem. Doing so will erase all your current network configurations including errors and invalid options. Your Wi-Fi networks will also be deleted in the process. Should you wish to proceed with this method, then here’s how it’s done:
- Go to the Home screen then tap Settings.
- Tap General.
- Scroll to and tap Reset.
- Select the option to Reset Network Settings.
- If prompted, enter your device passcode.
- Then tap the option to confirm network settings reset.
Your device should reboot by itself as soon as the network settings reset is complete. By then you can set up and reconnect to your Wi-Fi network and see if the problem is fixed.
Fifth solution: Restore your iPhone XS Max to its factory default settings.
Among the last options and possible solutions to try if the problem continues after applying all the aforementioned solutions would be a system restore. This can be the key to resolving the issue if it’s due to a more complex system error or tough bugs. Just don’t forget to back up all your critical data because they will also be cleared out in the process. Once you’re all set, follow these steps to restore your iPhone XS Max to factory settings through iTunes:
- Connect your iPhone X to your computer using the supplied USB/Lightning cable.
- Open iTunes on your computer and wait for it to recognize your iPhone.
- When your iPhone shows up in iTunes, select it.
- Then navigate to the Summary panel.
- Click the Restore [iPhone] button.
- Click the Restore button again to confirm.
Alternatively, you can perform a master reset through your iPhone XS Max settings menu. To do so, head over to Settings-> General-> Reset-> Erase all content and settings. Enter your device passcode when asked, then tap the option to confirm factory reset. Your iPhone should reboot automatically when the reset is finished and that also would be your cue to start setting up your iPhone as new.
If the problem persists after applying the given solutions, then you may have to consider escalating the issue already. There may be some more complicated issues that halts your iPhone XS Max from establishing Internet connection even when it’s already connected to the Wi-Fi network. For more advanced solutions, contact your device carrier or Apple Support team. You can also contact the manufacturer or your wireless router or modem, if you suspect that the problem is with the router or modem. And to ensure that the problem isn’t due to an outage, contact your Internet service provider and ask them to check their outage boards.
