Ecobee4 Vs Nest Best Smart Thermostats 2019

Winter is coming, which means it’s the right time to ditch your old, dumb thermostat and install a smart one instead. Arguably the two most popular smart thermostats in 2018 are the Nest Learning Thermostat, which is currently in its third generation, and the ecobee4, which, just like its name suggests, is in its fourth generation. We’ve tested both of these smart thermostats and know what their advantages and disadvantages are.

Build and Design

Both the ecobee4 and the Nest Learning Thermostat are way more attention-grabbing than traditional dumb thermostats. The ecobee4 has a rectangular look with round corners, whereas the Nest looks a lot like the iconic Honeywell Round manual thermostat or its more modern version for that matter.

You can control either thermostat with touch, but the Nest also has a stainless-steel outer ring that lets you intuitively adjust the temperature. The ecobee4 has no control element that’s functionally similar to Nest’s ring, but its large screen makes it very easy to navigate multiple levels of menus.

The ecobee4 comes in black, and its discrete look is interrupted only by an elegant status light that stretches along the top edge. The Nest comes in four color options—black, copper, stainless steel, white—so you shouldn’t have a problem finding one that matches your home décor.

Features

Because both the ecobee4 and the Nest are smart thermostats, they have several useful features that justify their price. To start, they both record and analyze HVAC data. This data helps you understand how much energy your home uses, how the local weather influences your energy usage, and what can you do to enhance energy efficiency.

While the ecobee4 works with 18 months of HVAC data, Nest only keeps data about the last 10 days. It’s no surprise that the analysis tool that you can use to make sense of the data recorded by the ecobee4, called Home IQ, is superior to the tool provided by Nest.

Home IQ provides you with information on your heating and cooling system that is more granular and allows you to see specific instances in time, related to your usage patterns and savings. Nest’s data analysis tool feels very limited in comparison.

Of course, you, just like many other satisfied Nest users, might not even care about HVAC data because Nest’s main selling point is that it automatically learns your schedule, which is something the ecobee4 can’t do. If your life follows regular patterns, it won’t take the Nest more than a week to learn how to maintain a pleasant temperature in your home when you’re there.

This feature works best if you own at least a few “Works with Nest” devices, such as Philips Hue lights and Wemo switches, because they communicate with the Nest Learning Thermostat and tell it when you’re home based on your interactions with them. If you, on the other hand, don’t live your life according to a fixed schedule, you’ll probably appreciate how easily you can program the ecobee4 to suit your needs.

Both the ecobee4 and the Nest support popular voice assistants. The ecobee4 works with Google Home, Amazon Alexa, and Apple HomeKit, but the Nest supports only Google Home and Amazon Alexa.

The ecobee4 comes with an additional sensor that you can put in another room to find the average temperature in your home. Extra sensors can be purchased in packs of two.

Price

Even though the sticker price on both of these smart thermostats, it would be more appropriate to say that the Nest Learning Thermostat costs less because of how often you can find it on sale for that price. That’s the price Amazon sells the Nest as of the time of writing this comparison.

Of course, you should remember that the ecobee4 with an extra sensor for free, whereas the Nest ships without a similar accessory.

Verdict

To decide which of these two excellent smart thermostats you should buy, ask yourself how much control over the temperature of your home you want to have. If you’re ready to fully entrust your comfort into the hands of a smart thermostat, the Nest will likely be a better choice for you. But if you like the idea of being able to go through detailed HVAC statistics and create complex temperature profiles, the ecobee4 is the way to go.
