How to fix an iPad Pro that has no sound or audio output

No sound and other audio problems in mobile devices are usually attributed to a damaged audio component. The same thing can happen if something is clogging inside the iPad’s audio port. In other instances, no sound problem in iOS device is tied to a misconfigured settings as well as rogue apps. The same problem can also occur from an iOS update especially those that contained audio bugs. That being said, both hardware and software components are involved. Thus ruling out software-related factors is recommended before rushing to a service center. Keep reading to find out what to do if you hear no sound coming from your iPad Pro (2018) tablet.

Troubleshooting iPad Pro that has no sound or has issues with its audio

Before troubleshooting, try to adjust the volume level by pressing on the Volume down and Volume up controls on the side of your iPad Pro. Low volume level is the very obvious possible reason but often neglected by many people. So make sure you don’t miss it too. Press the Volume Up key on your iPad until it reaches the maximum level. Then play a sound through any sound-enabled apps and see if the problem is fixed. Otherwise, refer to the given solutions below to troubleshoot and rule out software-related attributes from the probable causes. If you’ve installed any third-party protective casing on your iPad, remove them first when troubleshooting. Some non-Apple casings may not be a perfect fit for your iPad and therefore could possibly bar the sound output.

After performing each of the following procedures, open a sound-enable app to test if your iPad Pro sound is already audible.

First solution: Toggle the Mute switch then restart your iPad

The first obvious reason as to why your iPad has no sound is because it’s muted. To make sure that this isn’t causing you trouble, check the Mute control from the Control Center. Here’s how to get there:

  1. Launch the Control Center by swiping down from the top-right of the screen. 
  2. Then tap on the Silent Mode icon (bell icon) to turn the function on or off. 

If mute is enabled, the icon appears red with a white background. Since you want to enable sound from your iPad, make sure that the mute icon isn’t enabled.

After toggling the mute icon off, reboot your iPad to clear out caches and to refresh its memory and system functions.

To reboot/soft reset an iPad Pro, simply refer to these steps:

  1. Press and hold the Top button and either Volume button until the Power Off slider appears.
  2. Drag the slider to power off your device completely.
  3. After 30 seconds, press and hold the Top button again until the Apple logo appears.

Wait for your iPad to finish rebooting and then try playing sound through a sound-enabled app and see if you hear it now.

You can also ask Siri to turn the Volume Up for you. Just say “Hey Siri” to activate Siri app and then state your next commands. Be sure to speak clearly so that Siri will easily comprehend and execute your input voice commands correctly.

Second solution: Check and manage sound settings

You might have forgotten that you had turned the volume down to the lowest level and therefore result in hearing no sound coming from your iPad Pro. That said, adjusting the volume level through the physical volume controls should be deemed among the first possible solutions.

To adjust the volume for ringer and alert sounds, simply follow these steps:

  1. Tap Settings from the Home screen.
  2. Select Sounds.
  3. Then toggle the switch next to Change with Buttons to turn it off. Doing so locks the ringer and alert volumes. 

If you cannot hear sound from your iPad Pro through the headset, check and make sure that the volume limit is not set to the lowest. To check on this setting, just follow these steps:

  1. Tap Settings from your Home screen.
  2. Tap Music.
  3. Select Volume Limit.
  4. Then drag the slider to set the maximum volume. 

To prevent any unauthorized changes to the volume limit, you can adjust the settings with these steps:

  1. From the Home screen tap on Settings.
  2. Select General.
  3. Tap Restrictions.
  4. Then enable restrictions for Volume Limit.

Setting your device this way ensures that the volume isn’t limited.

Third solution: Install pending software updates

Updates can also be the key to resolving the issue if system bugs and malwares are to blame. Periodic iOS updates rolled out by Apple not only offer new features but also contain fix patches that are programmed to eliminate any bug-inflicted problems and system errors. If your iPad Pro has stable Internet access, enough memory and at least 50 percent battery life, try to check for any pending update to download and install. Here’s how:

  1. From the Home screen, tap Settings.
  2. Select General.
  3. Tap Software Update.
  4. Then tap the option to Download and Install if an update is available for your iPad Pro.

Follow the rest of the onscreen commands to finish updating your device. When the update is complete, reboot the iPad to save and apply the recent system changes.

Fourth solution: Disconnect Bluetooth connections on your iPad Pro.

With Bluetooth enabled on your iPad, sound/audio outputs can be routed straight to its paired Bluetooth audio device like a distant speaker or stereo. As a result, you won’t hear any sound coming from your iPad’s built-in speakers. To make sure that this isn’t the root cause of the problem, disconnect your iPad from any Bluetooth devices or simply disable its Bluetooth function. Just refer to these steps to make these settings changes:

  1. From the Home screen, tap Settings.
  2. Select Bluetooth and make sure the switch next to it is enabled.
  3. Scroll down to the list of saved Bluetooth devices.
  4. Then tap the option to Forget This Device.

After confirming that you’d want to forget the selected Bluetooth device, it will be removed from the list. Follow the same steps to delete/forget all other saved Bluetooth devices to prevent them from causing conflicts.

Another method to disconnect your iPad from any paired Bluetooth-enabled audio devices is using the Bluetooth toggle. Here’s how it’s done:

  1. Tap Settings from your Home screen.
  2. Select Bluetooth.
  3. Then toggle the Bluetooth switch to turn the function off.

Turning the Bluetooth switch off automatically disconnects your iPad from any Bluetooth device it’s paired with.

Fifth solution: Turn off Do Not Disturb.

One of the iOS features designed for privacy purposes is the so-called Do Not Disturb or DND feature. When this feature is enabled, all calls, alerts and notifications are muted. Thus you won’t hear any sound for incoming calls, message alerts and app notifications unless you’ve set some exceptions. To eliminate this from the possible causes, try to turn Do Not Disturb off and see if that solves the no sound problem on your iPad Pro. Here’s how to manage DND settings on your iPad Pro:

  1. Go to the Home screen then tap Settings.
  2. Tap Do Not Disturb.
  3. Then toggle the switch next to Do Not Disturb to turn off.

You can also adjust the settings if you wish to turn Do Not Disturb manually or set a schedule for it to activate. 

Another way to adjust this setting is through the Control Center. Just open the Control Center and then press and hold on the DND icon (crescent moon icon) to quickly adjust DND settings. Or simply tap the icon to turn the feature OFF.

Sixth solution: Reset all settings on your iPad Pro.

When auto-updates override your iPad settings, there is a tendency that audio settings conflicts arise. As a result, the iPad’s audio system got corrupted. To fix post-update flaws like this, resetting all settings on your iPad Pro can help. Doing so will erase all customized settings including automatic settings override from software updates. Any associated errors are likewise corrected. Unlike a master reset/factory reset, this process does not affect any saved information on the internal memory and therefore doesn’t cause permanent data loss. If you wish to proceed, simply follow these steps:

  1. Tap Settings from your Home screen.
  2. Tap General.
  3. Scroll down and tap on Reset.
  4. Choose Reset all settings from the given options.
  5. Enter your passcode when asked to proceed.
  6. Finally, tap the option to confirm all settings reset.

After the reset, your iPad restarts on its own and then loads up the original configuration. Features that are disabled by default must be re-enabled first so that you can use them again. Be sure to check that the mute, DND, and Bluetooth functions are disabled.

Last resort: Factory reset your iPad Pro.

Performing a full system reset or factory reset can be deemed as the last option and possible solution to try if none of the above procedure is able to solve the problem. The problem might be very complex and therefore requires advanced solutions. Before you proceed, be sure to back up all your important files to iTunes or iCloud so that you’d still be able to recover them after the reset. Note that a factory reset wipes everything from your device including saved files and downloads. Any stubborn bugs inflicting recurring symptoms will likewise be obliterated. A faster way to factory reset your iPad Pro is through its settings menu. Just follow these steps whenever you’re ready:

  1. Tap Settings from the Home screen.
  2. Select General.
  3. Scroll down to and tap on Reset
  4. Choose the option to Erase all content and settings.

  6. Tap the option to confirm that you want to erase and restore factory defaults on your iPad Pro.

After the reset, your iPad restarts and then loads up its factory defaults. You will need to set up everything like the first time you open your iPad. Just use the start-up wizard to set up and configure your iPad settings as new.

Still doesn’t hear any sound from your iPad Pro?

Try to check the iPad’s charging port or headphone jack. Dust and debris that are stuck in the port or headphone jack can also affect the sound output of your iPad so make sure it’s clean. You can also take your iPad to the nearest Apple service center in your area for hardware evaluation. If the underlying cause is software-related, then performing the above procedures should be able to resolve it. But since your iPad Pro still has no sound up to this point, then there’s a higher chance that you’re dealing with a hardware issue.
