Is your iPhone still functional?

Apparently, your iPhone has obtained hardware damage and therefore it needs repair. But before rushing to a service center, try to assess how bad the damage on your iPhone is. If the screen has just obtained a small crack, then try to turn your phone on. If it is still able to power on, then you’ve got a chance to recover important data and personal information saved on your iPhone storage. So here’s what you should do first:

  1. Connect your iPhone to a computer using the Apple-supplied USB cable or Lightning cable. You can use either a Windows PC or Mac computer for as long as it runs on a compatible OS with the iOS version of your iPhone.
  2. Then open iTunes on your computer. The latest version of iTunes app is recommended.
  3. Wait for iTunes to recognize your iPhone.
  4. Click the icon of your iPhone when it appears in iTunes.
  5. Navigate to the Summary section on the left sidebar.
  6. Under Manually Back Up and Restore, select the option to Back Up Now.
  7. When you’re finished, click Done.

If iCloud backups are enabled on your iPhone and that it’s still able to respond to screen taps and touches, then you can back up important files to iCloud. Just refer to these steps:

  1. Tap Settings from your Home screen.
  2. Select your Apple ID at the top of the screen.
  3. Tap iCloud to continue.
  4. Then tap iCloud Backup.
  5. Then tap the option to Back Up Now.

You must be signed into your iCloud account for the iCloud backup to be successful. Follow the rest of the onscreen prompts until your iPhone is finished backing up.

After backing up all your important data, you can take it to the nearest Apple Genius bar in your place and ask an iPhone technician to inspect and repair the damage. Your iPhone likely needs a screen replacement depending on how bad is the damage it acquired. Repairing a damaged iPhone at home is not recommended. Aside from the possibility that it will void any warranty, it will also put your device at risk to obtaining augmented damage especially if other components are accidentally ruptured in the process. Hence, seeking for an authorized technician’s aid is highly recommended.

If your iPhone is no longer showing signs of life, then you’ve got no other choice but to take it to a service center. Fixing a totally shattered iPhone screen usually takes longer, so you may have to leave your iPhone at the Apple repair center for a few days.

For other options and further recommendations, you can report the issue to your iPhone carrier. If it’s still covered by AppleCare warranty, then you may have to consider availing for warranty to save some bucks. Contact your carrier or iPhone provider to determine whether or not your device is eligible for service warranty or new unit replacement.
