My phone screen freezes constantly. It shows the lines on the top and bottom together at the same time like I’m trying to pull the top menu and the bottom Menu open. It did this about a year ago. Apple couldn’t figure it out and tried to get me to pay for the phone. I threw a fit and they gave me a new one. The phone was barely over a year old. The screen can be unresponsive and won’t let me touch anything. I’ve reset the phone, erased data and setting, and I’ve erased all content and settings. The phone works great for a few hours then acts up again. It’s so frustrating!! Please help. — Heather
Solution: Hi Heather. If the problem happens after re-installing apps, that’s an indication that one of the apps is to blame. We assume your phone is not jailbroken but if it is, remove the jailbreak software and try to screen which of your apps is problematic. You can skip jailbreak removal if the device is not jailbroken. You still need to identify which of your apps is causing this problem though using simple elimination process. First, you want to do restore all software settings to defaults by doing the steps below:
- Open Settings app.
- Tap General.
- Tap Reset.
- Tap Erase All Content and Settings.
- If prompted, enter your passcode.
- Tap Erase iPhone.
Once you’ve factory reset your device, install apps one by one. Since you have no idea which app is causing the trouble, you want to make sure that you observe the phone after every installation. This is the only way to identify the culprit. We know this looks inefficient (it is) but there really is no other way to help you.
Problem 2: iPhone 6 screen showing colored lines when unlocked
I have the iPhone 6 and recently replaced the LCD. Ever since, if I unlock my phone using the Home button the screen will unlock but I will only see colored lines running vertically on the screen. I have to then hit the lock button and then hit it again to get the normal screen to come back. I also haven’t been able to open my playlist in the music app since the switch too. The app will just crash. I’m not sure if that last problem is related though. — Cdrenth1
Solution: Hi Cdrenth1. We can’t think of any direct connection between a possible botched repair and a music app issue so make sure that you try the basic device troubleshooting first before eventually disassembling the phone again. Yes, you need to ensure that everything is in place, especially since you did the screen replacement yourself. DIY (do-it-yourself) repairs can sometimes be fun and can appear easy to perform but keep in mind that you’re dealing with delicate electronic parts here. A wrong or incompatible component can damage other parts or the entire logic board, which in turn can result to all sorts of problems.
As far as basic software device troubleshooting, here are the things that you should do:
- Force restarting the said app
- Updating the app
- Reinstalling the app (if it’s third party)
- Install the latest iOS update
- Doing the Erase All Content and Settings procedure
Once you’ve taken care of the problematic music app, you then want to deal with the main problem by disassembling the phone and doing the following:
- Check that the LCD cable is connected snugly by disconnecting the current screen and starting the entire screen replacement from the beginning.
- Make sure that the screen is again connected to the logic board properly. Any bent of missing pin/s can cause problems ranging from minor screen discoloration, running lines either horizontally or vertically, or a total screen blackout. If you notice a bent pin, carefully check if you can straighten it out. If you can’t, or if there’s a missing pin, you must replace the LCD.
- If you are positive that the screen has been properly connected to the main board, turn on your iPhone but do not close it up. This will allow you to do some troubleshooting further without removing the screws again.
- Be sure to recalibrate the device by restarting it.
- If everything is clear, finish the repair and close the phone up.
Keep in mind that any if there’s any stress marks or breaks in the flex cable, problems can develop at a later stage so you want to ensure that the screen assembly is not damaged in any way. Some cheap iPhone components online may be defective themselves so if the screen continues to behave erratically again afterwards, consider getting a new screen to replace the current one.
Problem 3: iPhone 6 screen colors change after installing an update
Hello. My iPhone’s screen has changed all of a sudden. Yesterday, I updated and now colours are broken. When I open my phone, iphone logo comes with a pink vs colour and phone is opening. After that, the colour is vanishing. I turn on and off the phone. Sometimes, It gets back to normal work but most of the time, screen is shaky and my phone opens some apps itself. But it happens when screen isn’t normal. When it is normal, not darkened, those problems don’t happen. — Seyyid
Solution: Hi Seyyid. If you’re positive that this strange discoloration started to occur right after an update, there must be an unknown iOS bug causing it. Make sure that you back your files up in both iTunes and iCloud. After that, wipe the phone by doing a full restore. Here’s how:
- Connect your iPhone to your computer with the cable that came with your phone.
- We assume you remember your phone’s passcode so simply enter it when you’re prompted for it.
- Select your iPhone once iTunes asks you for the specific device.
- Once you’re in the Summary panel or screen, select the option that will restore your device (Restore).
- Confirm by clicking on Restore button.
- Wait for a few moments while iTunes restores your device to its factory settings. It may also take some time if iTunes will need to install an updated operating system version.
- After this factory reset, all software settings should be restored to their defaults.
We haven’t encountered this particular behavior at this time so this can be an isolated issue on your phone. Make sure to contact Apple support if it returns following a full restore.
Problem 4: iPhone 6 won’t turn on when not plugged in after accidental drop
My phone was dropped and cracked and was not working. I went to a ifixit store and they replaced the screen. It worked for 1 day and then suddenly turned off and now won’t turn on at all unless plugged to a charger. When it is plugged into a charging device, it goes in and out of the white screen with the black apple logo. Also, before it stopped working, the wifi and the bluetooth functions were not working and the wifi button was blacked/greyed out when you tried to turn it on from sliding from the bottom of the iphone. — Steven
Solution: Hi Steven. We want to make it clear that blunt force trauma or shock from a drop almost always leads to problems sooner or later. In some cases, a bad drop may not result to something serious but since your phone stopped working right away, your particular situation may not be looking very good in the first place. That said, even a good repair technician may not be able to fully detect other problems other than the one that’s causing the most obvious symptoms. It’s hard to tell where the problem lies though if one can’t physically check the phone so we recommend that you bring the phone back to the shop that did the repair. Since the phone is obviously having power-related issues, the technician must check all major components that are involved in your phone’s power management such as the battery, power management IC, and the entire circuit. Any physical damage that can impact these components may or may not be fixed that’s why you need an experienced tech to advise you.
If possible, let the technician who did the initial repair check the phone again since he already knows the history of your device.
As far as device troubleshooting (software) is concerned, we don’t think there’s anything that you can do at this point. There’s no amount of software tweaks that you can do to fix a bad hardware. We’re not aware of any website that offers a detailed guide on how to diagnose a problem like this. Even if you can find one though, you still need, in the least, some basic electronics knowledge to do some stuff such as soldering or disassembling components. That said, just let someone who does repair for a living do the job for you.
Problem 5: iPhone SE calls work properly on speaker but sound muffled when speaker is off
Hi. I am having issues with making calls on my iPhone SE. I can hear people fine when I put the call on speaker phone… but they say I am really muffled and it is hard to hear me. If I take it off speaker phone they can hear me fine but I can no longer hear them, they sound like they are really far away and I can barely hear them at all.
I have tried a lot of the suggested fixes, such as resetting the phone, turning off the blue tooth…toggling the noise cancellation settings on and off… I have cleaned off the microphone hole, but nothing seems to fix the issue I’m having. I don’t think it’s an issue with the microphone itself in any case, because I can record a voice memo and I can hear myself just fine.
I can play music on my phone and I can hear the songs just fine so I can’t say it’s a problem with the speakers either. If I call someone or listen to my voice mail the sound is so low I cannot make out anything the other person is saying unless I put it on speaker. The only apps I’ve downloaded since I started having the issue are 2 games — pyramid solitaire and mahjong.
I do have an Otterbox case on my iPhone, but I haven’t had issues until recently, so I don’t think the case is blocking the speaker or microphone either.
I’m struggling to figure out what might be the issue. Any thoughts or suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks! — Cameron
Solution: Hi Cameron. If your recorded voice sounds as it should be, then you’re right; there’s nothing wrong with both speaker and microphone. This must be caused by an entirely new or unknown bug so try to doing what we recommend for others above — wipe the phone by performing the Erase All Content and Settings procedure. Once you’ve done that, try to replicate the problem before you install any of your apps. If calls work normally when on or off speaker, then our hunch is right, that one of the apps is causing the problem.
Problem 6: iPhone 6 date and time won’t change when using Costco app
My date functions keeping spitting out the current date and the next day. For example, today tried to make a reservation of a rental car on Costco travel website for next month. No matter what date and which airport i put in, it always comes out as July 27 – 28, today and tomorrow. A similar issue the restaurant reservation site open table only getting late times while on another phone was able to get other times. Another phone was able to get other dates too on the Costco travel site. Is there a bug or malware on my phone? Need help! Thanks. — Liane
Solution: Hi Liane. The issue may be caused by a bug, but whether it’s in the app or iOS, you have to find it out yourself. Below are the things that you must do:
Force close the app in question. Sometimes apps can act erratically for no obvious reason but once they’re restarted, they can start working normally again. To see if the bug is in the apps you’re using, try these steps:
- Go back to the Home screen.
- Double click the Home button to see the most recently used apps.
- Look for the apps in question by swiping left or right.
- Once you find the app, simply swipe up to close it.
Install app updates. If force closing the apps won’t fix the bug, be sure double check if they are up-to-date. Visit the App Store and check if there’s an available update. Remember to also update the rest of all your apps .
Restart the device. Like restarting apps, sometimes, a simple device restart can work wonders. Be sure to do this if you haven’t yet.
Install iOS updates. This is a no brainer but a lot of minor bugs are caused by incompatibility issues. To minimize bugs, make sure that your phone’s operating system is also updated. Be sure to make it a habit to always back your files up in either iTunes or iCloud or both before installing any iOS update.
Reset all settings. If all apps and iOS are running up-to-date versions at this time, be sure that you try to reset the settings in your phone.
- From the Home screen, go to Settings>General>Reset.
- Tap Reset All Settings.
- If presented, enter the passcode.
- Tap Reset All Settings to confirm.
Do a full restore. Should all the steps fail to fix your trouble, be sure that you wipe the phone clean by wiping the phone clean and re-installing all third party apps. Refer to the steps above on how to fully restore your phone.
Problem 7: iPhone 6 won’t boot, screen remains black
Hi. This is actually what has happened to my phone.
So apparently i was charging my phone, couldn’t quite remember it was at what percent but i was so sure that number of percent was going up (indicates that my charger is working), and I was about to reply my friend’s message on Whatsapp. Suddenly it went off.
At first i thought it was because i didn’t plug in the charger properly but then i remembered that it was just okay the time i saw the battery’s going up. So i waited for the Apple logo to appear but to no avail. Then i tried to press the home button and sleep button simultaneously but it only showed that charging sign. So i waited for about 30 minutes and tried the same thing and the only thing my phone has been showing is that charging sign. It was supposed to reboot and the Apple logo should appear but it isn’t. I don’t know what to do right now please help me :'( — Dinie
Solution: Hi Dinie. A black screen issue like the one you’re experiencing can be caused by a number of things so let’s make sure that we cover everything. You may have done some of the things that are in the list below so simply skip them.
Check if the phone turns on. Press and hold the Power button for at least 10 seconds. If the Apple logo does not appear, there may be a deeper reason why the phone continues to fail to boot up normally. These other issues include a bad Power button, iOS glitch, or other unknown hardware malfunction.
Proximity sensor not working properly. We’ve known some iPhones with proximity sensor problems in the past but since there’s no way to test them directly, the only thing that you can do about it is to reboot the phone and hope that it works fine. Keep in mind that if it’s a proximity sensor problem, the phone should still show indications that it turns on (although the screen remains black) such as making a sound for incoming alerts or messages, or vibrates when it’s restarted. If any of these two things occur and the screen remains black, you should consider sending the phone in so a technician can check the sensor itself.
Keep the phone charged. When your phone’s battery drops to 0%, it does not necessarily mean that the battery is completely empty of energy. There’s a remaining power still stored in the battery to allow the battery’s circuit to retain its memory and settings. If the phone’s screen still displays the charging icon, make sure to leave the device charged for at least 2 hours. If that won’t work, make sure that you also try another cable and charger.
Restore via DFU mode (Device Firmware Upgrade). When your device boots to DFU mode, it means that the phone powers on but hasn’t loaded iOS (operating system) yet. This means that DFU mode is a separate software environment and does not require iOS to work. Booting to DFU is the ultimate software troubleshooting for iOS devices. If you’ve reached this point in your troubleshooting ladder, this means that you have a very serious problem.
Booting your iPhone to DFU mode allows modification of core system files and folders so it’s inherently risky. It can potentially brick the phone and void its warranty so if you’re willing to take that risk, follow the following steps:
- Connect your iPhone to your PC and open iTunes.
- Hold down the power and home buttons together for 10 seconds.
- Let go of the power button but hold the home button until the Device in Recovery message appears in iTunes
- Follow the instructions on screen to reset your iPhone
Contact Apple support. Should the above solutions won’t work, the problem must be something board-related so you’ll want that only a trained professional do the hardware checks for you.
Problem 8: iPhone 6 screen won’t power on, black screen issue
Hi. My name is Jessica. My iPhone 6 had fell yesterday afternoon and ever since the screen has went completely black. I’ve noticed I was still able to screenshot and turn my volume up etc. The only problem was I just could not see my screen because it was still all black. Problem 9: iPhone 6 camera won’t work when using Snapchat
I’m having issues specifically with using my camera on Snapchat. I read your article seeing that restarting your phone might help the camera from crashing/only showing a black screen. Now that I’ve restarted my phone it says that I have placed restrictions on my camera not allowing it to be used. But when I go to general-restrictions, the restrictions are all off and I’ve never enabled them. Please help! — Kristophor
Solution: Hi Kristophor. Does the camera problem only happen when using Snapchat? If yes, then that means it’s an app-specific problem, a Snapchat issue rather than iOS. If you’ve already tried to restart the app (by force closing), or reinstalling it, you should contact Snapchat for support.
However, if the issue is true for any app that uses the camera, here are the things that you should do (in this order):
- install the latest iOS and app updates
- reset the phone (steps provided above)
- restore your iPhone (steps provided above)
- contact Apple support.
Problem 10: iPhone 6 won’t detect touches after screen replacement
Just replaced a cracked screen with a replacement screen with digitizer on my iPhone 6. Did this by the numbers being very careful in disassembly and re assembly. Touch on screen worked flawlessly on cracked screen but the new screen does not seem to sense any touch at all. Tried hard reboot, checked four connections from screen to board. Made sure all were properly seated and not bent. Even applied slight pressure to connectors with thumb and still did not get to accept any touch commands to screen. Picture on screen looks great with no lines or flaws. — Walt
Solution: Hi Walt. The best way to determine what went wrong is to take your device apart again, remove the screen and check if the digitizer cable is intact. A broken digitizer cable or flex cable is usually the reason why there’s no touch or partial touch problem after repair. Make sure that there’s no visible rip in the part where the cable widens out. A lot of inexperienced technicians and end users usually mess up the flex cable when feeding it from the front to the back of the phone. If you’ve connected the flex cable properly all along, then consider getting a new digitizer next. The current one may be defective that’s why the system is not registering your touches at all.
Problem 11: iPhone 6 won’t charge, won’t power on
So my phone had died on me and I hadn’t no way to charge urban until I had gotten home. When I got home I plugged it in to the wall, made sure it was plugged in and everything was fine. After I plugged it in for a second it immediately turned on for a few seconds than shut off. I let it charge all night come to the next day I wouldn’t turn on… tried to reboot it and it didn’t work.
