How to fix an Apple iPhone XR that cannot access App Store after iOS 12.2 update

When it comes to adding new apps on your Apple device, the App Store is the place to go. For as long as your device has access to the Internet, ample of storage space, and set up with a valid Apple account credentials, everything should work as intended. However, just like any other iOS apps and services, there are instances when the App Store isn’t accessible. And you will just realize that something is wrong if you’re getting some sort of message prompt or warning saying that your device cannot access the App Store.

This is definitely a problem because you won’t be able to download and update apps on your device. That said, something must be done to correct this error. In this, I will tackle a relevant issue on the iPhone XR, in which the device is unable to access the App Store after updating to iOS 12.2. Read on to learn how to deal with this issue.

Why does your iPhone XR fail to access the App Store after updating iOS?

Given that the problem started after installing the recent update to iOS, it is but most likely due to an update bug that caused the device to fail to access the App Store or vice versa. Even so, it is still important to look into other factors that are likely to cause you the same trouble. Among the factors that can be regarded as possible causes would include network connectivity error, invalid/misconfigured settings, account-related issues, and Apple server issues.

Before troubleshooting, check the current status of the Apple Server to ensure that the service is up and available. To do this, head over to the System Status page from the official website of Apple. From that page, you will see a list of all Apple online services including the App Store. If the dot before App Store appears green, it means that the service is up and available. If it’s gray, then that means the App Store is not available. If the App Store is down, then there’s not much you can do on your end to solve the problem. The only thing you can do is to wait until the service is back up and available again.  

If the App Store is available but you still cannot access it on your iPhone XR, try to access it using other Apple devices. If your other devices are able to access the App Store, then that’s a clear indication that something is wrong with your iPhone XR and that’s what you need to rule out.

The following are basic troubleshooting procedures you can try to rule out common factors that might have halted your iPhone XR from accessing the App Store after updating to iOS 12.2. Be sure to test launch the App Store after performing each method to determine whether or not the problem is solved.

First solution: Quit the App Store then relaunch it.

Like other applications, the App Store may also end up glitching after installing a new firmware update as it may not be able to promptly adapt with the recent system changes. When this happens, adverse symptoms would emerge and the application becomes unstable or not working at all. The easiest way to fix such problem is by quitting and restarting the application. So this is what you should do first:

  1. Swipe your finger up from the bottom of the screen and pause until the multitasking view appears.
  2. Look for the App Store card/preview.
  3. Swipe the App Store card/preview up off the screen to close it.

If you see other apps that are left suspended or running in the background, follow the same procedure to quit all those apps to prevent them from causing conflict with the App Store app. After clearing all background apps, launch or open the App Store again and see if you can now access it.

Second solution: Reboot your iPhone XR.

If restarting the App Store doesn’t do any good, then your next option would be a device restart. Restarting or performing a soft reset on your iPhone XR can help clear out random system errors including those inflicted by iOS update bugs. Thus, if you haven’t done this yet, soft reset/restart your iPhone XR with these steps:

  1. Press and hold the Side/Power button and either Volume buttons simultaneously for a few seconds.
  2. Release the buttons when the Slide to Power Off command appears and then drag the power off slider to the right.
  3. After 30 seconds, press and hold the Power/Side button again until the iPhone reboots.

This process does not affect any saved data on the internal storage, so you won’t lose any important information from your device.

Third solution: Refresh your Internet connection.

As explicated earlier, network connectivity errors are also among the possible causes. The update might have ruined your current network and thereby results to unstable or intermittent access to the Internet. To rule this out, turning Wi-Fi off and on, Airplane Mode on and off, or performing a network settings reset on your iPhone XR is recommended. Any of these methods can help clear out minor Internet issues and refresh your phone’s Internet connection.

  • To turn Wi-Fi off and on, simply head over to Settings-> Wi-Fi menu, then toggle the switch to turn Wi-Fi off for a few seconds and then turn on again.

Alternatively, you can do the Airplane Mode trick to restart all wireless radios including Wi-Fi connection at once. Here’s how it’s done:

  1. Go to Settings-> Airplane Mode menu.
  2. Toggle the Airplane mode switch to turn the feature ON. Doing so turns off all wireless features and functions of your iPhone.
  3. Restart/soft reset your iPhone while Airplane mode is enabled.
  4. When the iPhone reboots, head back to Settings-> Airplane mode menu then toggle the switch to turn Airplane Mode OFF again. Wireless radios and other relevant functions are likewise reactivated on your device.

If none of that helps, then your next option would be to reset network settings on your iPhone XR. By doing so, all your current network settings and configurations are deleted and the default network options are restored. Any problem or network error associated by incorrect network settings will also be deleted.

  • To reset network settings on your iPhone XR, go to Settings-> General-> Reset menu, then select the option to Reset network settings.

When the reset is finished, your phone should restart automatically and then loads up the default network options. To reconnect to the Internet and use online services, set up and connect to your Wi-Fi network.

Fourth solution: Disable restrictions on your iPhone XR.

There are some functions and services that won’t be used or unavailable if restrictions are enabled on your phone. And the App Store downloads and updates are among these services. To eliminate this from the possible causes, turn off restrictions on your iPhone XR with these steps:

  1. Tap Settings from the Home screen.
  2. Tap Screen Time.
  3. If necessary, tap the option to Turn On Screen Time.
  4. Tap Content & Privacy Restrictions to turn it OFF.
  5. Enter the four-digit passcode to continue.
  6. Re-enter the same four-digit passcode to confirm.

After turning Restrictions OFF, restart your iPhone and launch the App Store to see if the problem is gone.

Fifth solution: Log out and back into your App Store account.

Your Apple ID serves as the primary key that connects you to all Apple contents and services including App Store. It’s possible that your App Store login session had expired following the recent system update as new changes are applied to the platform. As a result, other associated services to your Apple ID are no longer accessible. This is when logging out and back into your App Store account is necessary. So here’s what you should do then:

  1. Open Settings from your iPhone Home screen.
  2. Tap to select your Apple ID banner at the top of the screen.
  3. Scroll down to the bottom and then tap the option to Sign Out.
  4. If you set up different accounts for iCloud and the iTunes and the App Store, tap the option to Sign out of iCloud. Otherwise, enter the password associated with your Apple ID.
  5. Then tap Turn Off.
  6. If necessary, turn on any data that you want to save on your device.
  7. Next, tap Sign Out.
  8. To confirm that you want to sign out, tap Sign Out again.

After signing out of your iCloud/App Store account, reboot your iPhone to refresh and dump caches from its memory. As soon as it boots up, head back to Settings and sign back into your iCloud and App Store account.

Sixth solution: Reset all settings on your iPhone XR.

Aside from network settings, there are also other settings that can affect App Store services when enabled or disabled on your phone. The fact that some updates would automatically override settings on the receiving device makes it necessary to reset all settings after installing a firmware update on your iPhone. This reset erases all current system settings including update overrides that caused minor system flaws and atypical symptoms. But unlike a factory reset, this reset won’t affect any saved information on the phone’s internal memory so there’s no need to worry of permanent data loss. That said, you can proceed with this reset even without backing up your iPhone. Simply follow these steps:

  1. From the Home screen, go to the Settings app.
  2. Tap General.
  3. Select Reset.
  4. Then, select Reset all settings.
  5. If prompted, enter your passcode and follow the onscreen guide to complete the process.

After the reset, your iPhone will restart automatically and then loads the default options and original configuration. To use features that are disabled by default, you will need to enable them first. That said, enable Wi-Fi to reconnect your iPhone to the Internet and use online services including App Store. Once connected, launch the app and see if it’s already working as intended.

Seventh solution: Erase your iPhone and restore its factory defaults.

Performing a factory reset or master reset can be considered among the last options if none of the previous methods is able to fix the problem. What you’re dealing with could be very complex and thus require more advanced solution including full system reset. This is likely the case if the iOS update has ruined the App Store system. But before you factory reset your iPhone XR, be sure to back up all your important files to iCloud or iTunes so you can still recover them later. Once the backup is secured, follow these steps to factory reset your iPhone XR via settings:

  1. From your Home screen, tap on Settings.
  2. Select General.
  3. Scroll down to and then tap on Reset.
  4. Select the option to Erase all content and settings.
  5. Enter your device passcode when asked to proceed.
  6. Tap the option to confirm full system reset. Your phone will now start erasing and then restores its factory default settings.

When the reset is finished, your iPhone should restart itself. After it reboots, follow the setup wizard to proceed with the initial setup process.

Alternatively, you can use iTunes to manually erase and restore factory default settings on your iPhone XR. To get started, you will need to secure a computer that has the latest iTunes version installed. Once the equipment is ready, connect your iPhone to the computer using the Apple-supplied USB cable or Lightning cable. Then wait for it to sync with iTunes so you can start erasing and restoring your device to its factory defaults using iTunes commands.

Still unable to access the App Store on your iPhone XR?

You may opt to restore your iPhone XR to a previous iOS backup if it’s still unable to access the App Store after performing basic troubleshooting. While this may be considered a downgrade, this could be the only way for your phone to regain access to the App Store.

You can also contact Apple Support to report the issue if none of the given solutions is able to fix it. There might be a problem with the Apple server that resulted to the App Store services being down at the moment. Also let them know what exactly had transpired before you find out that your iPhone XR has no access to the App Store. Should this be confirmed inflicted by an iOS bug, a dedicated fix patch is required.
