How to fix iPhone XS Max slow wifi issue
Knowing the reason why wifi does not work well on an iPhone is not always simple. Learn what to do when faced with this problem.
Verify it’s not your wifi
Before conducting troubleshooting step on your iPhone XS Max, you should make sure that it’s not your wifi network that’s causing the problem. We assume of course that you are having an issue with a wifi network you have control over. If you only have a slow wifi issue on a particular wifi network, like in a cafe or at work, it’s possible that your iPhone does not have a problem at all. In this case, you should consider talking to the wifi administrator to see if there’s anything that they can do help in improving the speed when your iPhone uses their network.
If your iPhone wifi performance is slow only when connected to your own wifi network, you may need to troubleshoot your networking equipment to fix the problem. The best way to do that is to powercycle everything — modem, router, and other wireless devices, including your iPhone. After restarting every device in your network, do a quick speedtest to see if there’s an improvement. Make sure to check your home wifi speed across at least two wireless devices so you can get a rough estimate. If the other device shows an acceptable wifi speed that’s closer to what is expected, you must compare that speed test result with the one on your iPhone. If yours show a slower speed, there must be something in your device that slows down the internet.
To continue the troubleshooting on your iPhone XS Max, the first step is to refresh the system. You can do that by simulating the effect of disconnecting the battery. This process is called forced reboot and it’s useful in fixing minor bugs. This is how it’s done:
- Press and quickly release the Volume Up button.
- Then press and quickly release the Volume Down button.
- Finally, press and hold the Side (Power) button until you see the Apple logo.
Install system update
Sometimes, network bugs may develop and can only be fixed by iOS updates. Be sure to keep your device’s operating system up-to-date to minimize bugs.
Your iPhone is set to automatically download and install iOS updates but if you changed this setting before, be sure to manually check for system updates regularly.
Forget wifi networks
Some wifi bugs may occur due to outdated wifi credentials. Try to delete (forget) your wifi on your iPhone, then reconnect.
To forget a wifi network:
- Open Settings app.
- Tap Wi-Fi.
- Tap Forget this network.
- Confirm the action.
- Tap Forget.
Clear browser app cache and data
If wifi performance appear to slow down only when using your default internet browser (Safari), you should try to troubleshoot the app instead. You can do that by clearing its history, cache, and cookies.
To clear Safari history and cookies:
- Open Settings app.
- Tap Safari.
- Tap Clear History and Website Data.
To clear Safari cookies and keep your history:
- Open Settings app.
- Tap Safari.
- Tap Advanced.
- Tap Website Data.
- Tap Remove All Website Data.
Reset network settings
Many iPhone XS Max users find clearing their device’s network settings helpful in fixing wifi problems. Make sure to do this step if the issue remain up to this point.
- Tap Settings to open the app.
- Tap General.
- Tap Reset.
- Select the option to Reset Network Settings.
- If prompted, enter the device password.
- Confirm action.
A more drastic solution in this case is to revert all software settings to their defaults with factory reset. This solution will erase your personal data so be sure to back them up ahead of time.
To factory reset your iPhone XS Max:
- Tap to open the Settings app from Home.
- Tap on General.
- Scroll down to and then tap on Reset.
- Select the option to Erase all content and settings. This will master reset your iPhone XS Max.
- If prompted, enter your device passcode to continue.
- Then tap the option to confirm factory reset.
Ensure there’s no router restrictions
If you are not the administrator of your home wifi, it’s possible that the person in charge may have set a speed restriction specifically for your device. Be sure to talk to that person so this possibility can be checked. If there are no other people with access to the router and you’re the administrator, consider getting help from your Internet Service Provider for troubleshooting steps. Every ISP has unique equipment and there may be some router settings that were changed causing this problem.
We rarely encounter slow wifi issues on iPhone that warrant repair or replacement but if nothing has changed so far, talk to Apple so they can consider replacing your iPhone XS Max.
