Potential solutions to fix sound / audio problems on your iPhone 8 Plus
Highlighted below are recommended standard procedures or generic solutions for you to try on. If you were able to identify the underlying cause, then you can go ahead and work straight on what needs to be fixed on your iPhone. Otherwise, you’ll need to go for a trial-and-error approach. Be sure to test your iPhone after completing each of the given solutions so that you’ll know if the problem is fixed or not. Reboot your iPhone 8 Plus (soft reset).
There are times when your phone just stopped making sound due to random apps glitches. That said, it can be just an isolated issue transpiring on pertinent apps like YouTube, Spotify, etc. And oftentimes, minor apps glitches like this are remedied by performing a soft reset or simply rebooting your iPhone. For starters, here’s how a soft reset is done on your iPhone 8 Plus:
- Press and hold the Power button or now called the Side button on your iPhone 8 Plus.
- Slide the Power off switch to turn off your iPhone completely.
- Allow your device several seconds to power off.
- After about 30 seconds, press and hold the Power/Side button until the Apple logo appears.
Alternative solution to a soft reset: Forced restart (if applicable).
A forced restart is alternative restart method to use when your iPhone suddenly gets frozen due to rogue apps. If is having both no sound and freezing problems, then your very solution to try is a forced restart. Similar to a soft reset, a forced restart will not affect any of your iPhone data for as long as it’s properly done. And here’s how:
- Press and quickly release the Volume Up button then press and quickly release the Volume down button.
- After a few seconds, press and hold the Power/Side button until the Apple logo appears.
Wait until your iPhone boots up completely then test to see if you can now hear it sounds.
Check and adjust the call volume or ringer volume.
If you are having trouble hearing sound while having a phone call conversation on your iPhone 8 Plus, then it’s possible that the call volume is set to a low or lowest level. In this case, check and ensure that the call volume is properly set to an acceptable level or loud enough for you to hear the voice of the person on the other line.
To adjust the ringer volume on your iPhone 8 Plus, simply press the Volume Up or Down keys on the side of your iPhone until you get to your ideal volume level.
You can also try toggling the ringer switch to put your iPhone in silent mode (mute) for a few seconds and then toggle the ringer to switch back to ring mode.
Enable Phone Noise Cancellation.
Your iPhone has a phone noise cancellation feature you can use or activate when having trouble hearing a caller while on phone conversation due to static or noisy background. If you haven’t already, then you should give it a try and see if that fixes the problem.
To enable this feature on your iPhone, go to Settings-> General-> Accessibility-> Phone Noise Cancellation, then make sure it is enabled or turned on. If not, tap the switch next to Phone Noise Cancellation to turn the feature off.
Restart your phone after making necessary changes to these settings then see if that fixes the problem.
Set Call Audio Routing feature to Automatic.
Another possible reason as to why you don’t hear your iPhone sound for incoming calls, texts, emails, or even when attempting to play music on it is that your iPhone is likely connected to a Bluetooth device or accessory. If this is so, then all audio outputs from your iPhone are routed to the Bluetooth device it is paired with and connected to. To make sure that this isn’t causing your trouble, go ahead and check your Bluetooth settings and ensure Bluetooth feature is disabled or turned off.
To turn off Bluetooth in iOS 11, go to Settings-> Bluetooth-> then tap the switch next to Bluetooth to turn off.
Aside from Bluetooth, your iPhone also has a pertinent feature called Call Audio Routing. It is mainly used to identify where the audio will be heard during a phone call or FaceTime audio.
To check and configure this feature, go to Settings-> General-> Accessibility-> Call Audio Routing-> then select Automatic.
After making necessary changes to these settings, restart your iPhone then test to see if sound functions are already working as intended.
Other options to consider
- Clean up your iPhone speaker. Dust and dirts that clogged in the speaker holes on your device can bar the sound or audio output and thus resulting to very low sound to no sound at all. You can clean up the speaker on your iPhone 8 Plus using a soft toothbrush to gently brush out dirt and dust from the speaker area. After cleaning, test the sound to see if cleaning does make the speaker work as intended.
- Verify and turn off Do Not Disturb if necessary. DND or Do Not Disturb is a feature that is used to silence calls, alerts, and notifications on your iPhone. You can access this feature on your iPhone 8 Plus by going to Settings-> Do Not Disturb. Or you can also swipe up from the bottom of the Home screen to show the quick settings menu and then select the Do Not Disturb icon. Make sure it’s turned off.
- Restore your iPhone 8 Plus to its factory default settings. Now, if you’ve reached this part with the same audio or no sound problem, then the next option for you to consider is a factory reset or full system restore on your iPhone 8 Plus.
