Things to do before transferring contents from your old iPhone to your new iPhone X

Before you get started, there are some things you need to note and consider doing.

First step: Unpair your Apple Watch from your previous iPhone.

First, you need to unpair your Apple Watch (if you have one) from your previous iPhone before you set up your new iPhone. Here’s how:

  1. Keep your Apple Watch and previous iPhone in close distance ( preferably next to each other) as you unpair them.
  2. Open the Apple Watch app on your iPhone.
  3. Go to the My Watch tab.
  4. Tap your watch at the top of the screen.
  5. Tap the i icon (i in black circle) located next to the watch that you want to unpair.
  6. Tap the option to Unpair Apple Watch.
  7. For Apple Watch Series 3 or GPS + Cellular version of the watch, you may choose to keep or remove your cellular plan. Keep your plan if you want to pair your Apple Watch and iPhone again. Otherwise, remove your plan. Contact your carrier for more details on this matter.
  8. Tap again to confirm.
  9. If prompted, enter your Apple ID passwords to disable Activation Lock. Your iPhone creates a new backup of your Apple Watch before erasing all content and settings on your Apple Watch. You can use this backup to restore a new Apple Watch.

When the Apple Watch unpairs, the Start Pairing message will appear. Unpairing will likewise erase your Apple Watch and restores it to factory settings.

But what if you don’t have your iPhone?

You can still erase your Apple Watch even if you don’t have your iPhone.

  1. To do so, go to your Apple Watch then tap Settings-> General-> Reset-> Erase All Content and Settings.
  2. Select to either keep or remove your plan.
  3. Tap Erase All to confirm action.

Wait for your Apple Watch to reset to the factory settings.

Second step: Update your old iPhone (if applicable).

Before you switch your Apple Watch from your old iPhone to your new iPhone X, update your old iPhone to the latest iOS and Apple Watch to the latest watchOS version. Then, navigate to the Home screen on both your Apple Watch and iPhone at the same time. This is only if you still have your old iPhone or backup with you though.

Note: If you no longer have it then you will need to set up your Apple Watch as new. Doing so will lose any previous Activity, Workouts, or settings but your contents will sync from the new iPhone to your Apple Watch.

Third step: Back up your old iPhone or iOS device.

If you haven’t done it already and you still have your old iPhone with you, create a backup of your old iPhone either through iCloud or iTunes. If you prefer to use iTunes, don’t forget to encrypt your backup in order to save your Health and Activity content. If you don’t have your old iPhone, proceed to the next step and use your most recent backup instead.

Fourth step: Set up your new iPhone X.

Be sure to keep your Apple Watch close to your iPhone X during the set up. When your iPhone asks if you want to use your Apple Watch, tap Continue. Wait until the set up is finished and you can start using your Apple Watch with your new iPhone X by then.
