Not so sure what the best GPS watch is for hiking? Then be sure to follow along with us below — we’ll show you the best watches out there. Let’s dive right in.

Apple Watch Series 4

Coming in at number one on our list is the Apple Watch Series 4. It doesn’t get much better than the technology Apple has been able to pack in this watch. Not only will you be able to track steps taken, elevation, calories burned, and more, but you’ll also be able to use the GPS functionality to track the routes you’ve taken. This is handy for looking back on to see where you went so you can take an alternate route next time. Not only that, but it can give you more accurate information on your distance traveled. Of course, there’s a variety of hiking apps on the App Store that you can take advantage of to better your hiking experiences.

The Apple Watch Series 4 also comes with a really unique feature — fall tracking. If you fall and can’t get up while on your run, the Series 4 Apple Watch will alert emergency services immediately.

Samsung Galaxy Watch

Samsung’s Galaxy Watch is another excellent GPS watch. Just like the Apple Watch Series 4, you’ll be able to track things like calories burned, steps taken, distance traveled, elevation, and more, all from the native Health app. There’s a handful of hiking and fitness apps that you can download to increase the overall functionality. The Galaxy Watch connects up pretty well to the iPhone as well — the only “con” is that it won’t work with the calling and texting features, so you’ll still have to pull out your iPhone to check those notifications.

Apple Watch Series 3

Third on our list, you might want to consider picking up the Apple Watch Series 3. Sure, it might now be considered last year’s technology, but the Apple Watch Series 3 actually has much of the same great software that the Series 4 has. You’ll be able to easily keep track of calories burned, elevation, distance traveled, etc. Just like the Series 4, you can consult the App Store for additional fitness and hiking apps to better your hiking experience.

The nice thing about the Apple Watch Series 3 is that, since it’s last year’s watch from Apple, you can get it at a significant discount in comparison to the Series 4. The “con” is that you won’t get access to the fall tracking that is exclusive to the Series 4, though that may be a good or bad thing, depending on how you feel about it!

TicWatch Pro

The TicWatch Pro is another excellent choice for those that have a preference for Google’s own Watch OS. The TicWatch Pro is an attractive watch with GPS functionality inside. It has some native health features that make it easy to track steps, calories burned, distance traveled, heart rate, and so much more. With the GPS function, you can use the TicWatch Pro to map your routes, too.

Fossil Explorist HR

Coming in last, we’re looking at the Fossil Explorist HR. We really like this watch because this has all of the health features and GPS functions you would want for hiking. Not only that, but Fossil takes things a step further — it’s swim proof, so you can take this on laps around the pool without water destroying it. The Explorist HR runs on Google’s Wear OS, so you can easily access the Google Play Store for some additional hiking and GPS functionality. It works just fine with your iPhone as well.

Verdict

As you can see, there are a lot of excellent GPS watches for hiking available today. Any one of these will help you accomplish the goals of recording your hiking results, as well as the routes you’ve taken; however, we really do like what the Apple Watch Series 4 has to offer here. The “fall tracking” is just so nice because, if you get in a pinch with no one around, authorities will be alerted to your situation. Not only that, but when you’re not exercising, the Apple Watch Series 4 is a stylish option for a night out on the town and for business meetings.
