Create a backup

Before you update your iPhone XS iOS to the latest version, don’t forget to create a backup of your personal data first. There’s a number of options that you can take to do that. The fastest way to backup your files is by using iTunes. You obviously need a computer to do this so if that’s an issue, you can also opt for another way to create copies of your files through iCloud. With iCloud, all you need is an internet connection and enough iCloud storage space. The main disadvantage of iCloud is the limited amount of storage space that you can use. If you want to get more space, you can always pay Apple for it.

Other not-so-easy ways to create a backup exists but we only want to recommend the two.

How to install iOS update on your iPhone XS

There are two general ways to install Operating System update to your iPhone XS. The first one is by tapping on Install Now option when it becomes available. This is usually the easier one.

If you want to manually check for iOS updates, or if there’s no Install Now option for your device, you can follow the steps below:

  1. Most iOS updates can reach 1GB in size. There should be at least 2GB free space in your iPhone XS before you update.
  2. Make sure your iPhone XS has over 50% battery power left. Better still, connect it to a charger to make sure that it won’t power down in the middle of an update.
  3. Connect to a fast wifi network. If money is not an issue and you can afford mobile data internet, you can also use that.
  4. Tap Settings.
  5. Tap General.
  6. Tap Software Update.
  7. Tap Download and Install. If a message asks to temporarily remove apps because iOS needs more space for the update, tap Continue or Cancel. Later, iOS will reinstall apps that it removed.
  8. Once the update files have been downloaded, it’s time for you to install the update. Tap Install for that.
  9. Enter the passcode when prompted.

Allow device to install updates automatically

If you don’t want to go through the hassle of manually checking for updates next time around, make sure that your iPhone is set to automatically update on its own. By default, it’s supposed to download and install updates but if you think you changed this behavior before, you can do the following to check again:

  1. Tap Settings.
  2. Tap General.
  3. Tap Software Update.
  4. Tap Automatic Updates.

How to update your iPhone XS using iTunes

Another way to update your device is by using iTunes. Updating via iTunes can come handy if you are unable to install updates over-the-air. Here’s what you need to do:

  1. On your computer, make sure that iTunes runs its latest version by updating it.
  2. Using the lightning cable that came with your iPhone XS, connect it to your computer.
  3. Open iTunes and select your device.
  4. Click Summary, then click Check for Update.
  5. Click Download and Update.
  6. If asked, enter your passcode.
