How to fix your Apple iPhone X Cellular Data that won’t work after installing iOS 12 update [Troubleshooting Guide]

Software updates are rolled out to bring in new features and to enhance system functions. While device manufacturers strongly encourage end-users to keep their device software up-to-date, it isn’t mandatory. Nevertheless, updating is still necessary to prevent your phone services from becoming obsolete. But then again, updating doesn’t always bring positive outcomes. In fact, many people end up facing various types of post-update issues ever since the first mobile platform was released. And these become among the reiterating problems in both Android and iOS devices up to the present.

On the positive note, these are generally software-related issues and therefore rectifiable by end-users. This post aims to address a post-update issue on the iPhone X device, particularly after the iOS 12 update. It highlights some simple solutions to a problem on the iPhone X cellular data that is not working after updating the phone system to iOS version 12. Feel free to refer to this walkthrough when needed.

But before anything else, if you have another issue with your phone, drop by our troubleshooting page as we have already addressed hundreds of issues reported by the owners. Odds are that there are already existing solutions on our website or at least, there are similar problems we already fixed. So, try to find ones that are similar or related to your problem. First solution: Turn Cellular Data off and back on.

It’s normal for some features to act up after a major system transition. And this could be what’s going on with your iPhone X cellular data after migrating from iOS 11 to iOS 12. In this case, the simplest possible solution to apply is the cellular data off and on trick. Here’s how it’s done:

  1. Go to Settings-> Cellular menu. Then toggle the Cellular Data switch to turn the feature off and on.
  2. Alternatively, you can swipe open the Control Center of your iPhone and then tap the Cellular Data icon to turn the feature on or off.

A green icon is indication that Cellular Data is ON. Otherwise, the icon appears gray. In this case, it should be green.

This workaround works as if it’s giving an exclusive restart on to the phone’s cellular data functions. Surprisingly, this simple trick does some wonder when it comes to clearing random glitches that may be affecting network services.

Second solution: Toggle Airplane mode on and off again.

Another old trick that effectively gets rid of minor network problems including post-update symptoms is the Airplane mode toggle. It basically works by enabling Airplane mode shortly and then disabling it again. Many people found this trick helpful in resolving network connection errors on Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and Cellular Data. And here’s how it’s carried out:

  1. Tap Settings from the Home screen.
  2. Select Airplane Mode from the menu options.
  3. Then tap the Airplane mode switch to enable it. Doing so disables all wireless features of the phone.
  4. Restart/soft reset your iPhone X while Airplane mode is enabled.
  5. Then go back to Settings-> Airplane mode menu and toggle the switch to disable Airplane mode again.

All wireless features are now active and working properly again. See if that fixes a post-update issue with your iPhone X cellular data too.

Third solution: Update carrier settings on your iPhone X.

Carrier settings updates are other types of updates rolled out by network service providers or carrier. These updates usually contain small files that are programmed to improve carrier services on the phone, particularly network-associated services. Some carrier settings update are mandatory, which means they’re automatically installed without you even knowing while others are optional. Optional updates from your carrier may also contain the required fix to clear post-update bugs affecting cellular data network and relevant services. Thus, installing the update is also worth a shot.

  • To check for carrier settings update on your iPhone X, go to Settings-> General-> About menu.

Wait for a few seconds for the new screen to pop up. If an update is available, you should see a carrier settings update notification under Carrier menu on the screen. To manually install the update, simply follow the given instructions.

Fourth solution: Reset network settings on your iPhone X.

A network settings reset is often needed to deal with network errors caused by incorrect network configurations on the phone. The new update can cause such errors if they’re programmed to automatically override settings on the receiving device. And here’s one way to fix these errors:

  1. Open the Settings app from Home.
  2. Tap General.
  3. Scroll to and tap Reset.
  4. Select the option to Reset network settings.
  5. Enter your device passcode to continue.
  6. Then tap the option to network settings reset.

Wait for your iPhone to reboot and then loads the default network settings configuration. By then you can start enabling necessary features including Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and cellular data to use them on your phone again.

Fifth solution: Reset and restore your iPhone X to factory defaults (master reset).

Some post-update issues are too complex that could not be remedied by simple workarounds. To deal with these types of problems, a full system reset is usually needed. That being said, you may resort to a factory reset among the last possible solutions. Please note though that this reset will delete everything from your phone including personal information and saved files. Should you wish to continue, back up all critical data you stored on the phone memory before performing these steps:

  1. Tap Settings from the Home screen.
  2. Tap General.
  3. Scroll to and tap Reset.
  4. Select the option to Erase all content and settings.
  5. Enter your device passcode to continue.
  6. Then tap the option to confirm factory reset.

When the reset is finished, your iPhone X should restart automatically and then loads the default settings. To use your iPhone X again, you need to set it up as new or restore from a previous backup. Consider the first option if you’d prefer to give your device a clean fresh start. And don’t forget to enable cellular data afterwards and see if it’s already working properly.

You can also use iTunes to reset and restore your iPhone X on a computer. Other possible solutions you can try if you wish to further troubleshoot major system errors are recovery mode restore and DFU mode restore. Both methods are carried out on a computer using iTunes. A more detailed walkthrough on how to perform a recovery mode restore and DFU mode restore on the iPhone X is outlined on the Tutorials section of this site. Just visit the iPhone X troubleshooting page to access a step-by-step guide on both iOS restore methods.

If the problem continues and cellular data still doesn’t work on your iPhone X after doing a master reset, then you should already escalate the problem to your Internet service provider/carrier. There may be some temporary network problems that may be affecting cellular data services at the moment.

Alternatively, you can report the issue to Apple Support. Note that the symptom has instigated following the iOS update implementation and since it persisted after applying some workarounds, a fix patch is likely needed. And should this be a widespread post-update issue, Apple will be obliged to fix it through a minor update.
