How To Fix iMessage Out Of Order On iPhone

iMessage is a messaging service that can only be availed on Apple devices such as the iPhone, iPad or Mac. It allows people not only to send messages but other multimedia content as well such as photos, videos, and voice files among others. Think of this as Apple’s version of MMS but only better.

Since the iPhone is a very popular phone a lot of people use the iMessage service to communicate with one another. While the phone makes sure that the message you get is in the correct order there are instances when the iMessage is out of order on the iPhone. This will oftentimes lead to confusing messages.

If you are experiencing out of order iMessages on your iPhone then you should follow the troubleshooting steps listed below which should fix the problem.

  • Make sure that your phone is running on the latest iOS version. Updates usually come with several bug fixes that can eliminate known issues which is why you need to make sure that your phone software is updated.
  • Try to force close the Messaging app. For the iPhone X this is done by swiping up from the home screen then hold for a second then release to bring up the app switcher. Long press on Messages then swipe up or tap on the red x. For other models just double click on the home button then swipe up on the Messages card.
  • Try restarting the phone. Sometimes the phone software will experience the occasional hiccups due to data not being handled properly. A restart will refresh the phone software and will usually fix this particular problem.
  • Force restart the phone. For the iPhone 7 and 7 Plus press and hold the Side button and Volume Down button together for about 10 seconds, until you see the Apple logo appear. For the iPhone X, iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus quickly press and release the Volume Up button, then do the same for the Volume Down button. Finally, hold the Side button down until you see the Apple logo. For other iPhone models press and hold the Side button and Home button together for about 10 seconds until you see the Apple logo appear.
  • Make sure that the Date and Time setting of the phone is set to automatic.
  • Try turning iMessage off then on again.

If the above steps fail to fix the problem then you should reset your phone settings. This is done by opening the Settings app and tap General -> Reset -> Reset All Settings. You will be asked to enter the phone passcode.
