How to troubleshoot iPhone 7 Plus with iMessage that stopped working

Before troubleshooting your iPhone system, check your data connection. Unlike the traditional SMS and MMS messaging, iMessage utilize data to send messages instead of using text messaging plan through cellular service provider. The only drawback with iMessage so far, is the fact that it only works between Apple devices. So if you’re trying to send iMessage to an Android device, then that won’t work for certain. First solution: Quit then restart Messages app.

Minor software errors affecting the Messages app can also affect the iMessage functions and may trigger errors to show up. To clear out the glitches, restarting the Messages app on your iPhone 7 Plus can help. Here’s how:

  1. Double tap the Home key to bring up the apps preview screen or fast app switcher.
  2. Swipe up on the Messages app preview and then flip it up and off the screen to close.

  1. Connect your iPhone to your computer using the supplied USB connector or Lightning cable and then open iTunes.
  2. With your iPhone connected, do a force restart by pressing and holding on the Side/Power button and Volume Down button simultaneously for a while. Do not release the buttons when the Apple logo appears, instead, wait until you see the Connect to iTunes screen.
  3. Release the buttons when the Connect to iTunes screen appears. This should put your device in a recovery state.
  4. When prompted with the option to Update or Restore in iTunes, select Restore.
  5. Wait while iTunes attempts to reinstall iOS and download the software for your device.

Usually the download would take 15 minutes.  If it exceeds 15 minutes, then your iPhone will exit the Connect to iTunes screen and should that happens, just let the download finish and then go back to the previous steps to get to the Connect to iTunes screen and enter recovery mode again.

After restoring your iPhone through iTunes, set up iMessage from scratch. Make sure iMessage is set up correctly this time. Here’s what you should do then:

  1. Tap Settings.
  2. Tap Messages.
  3. Then tap on Send & Receive. A list of phone numbers and email addresses that are configured to send and receive iMessages on your phone will show up.
  4. Navigate to Start New Conversations From.
  5. If there is no checkmark next to your phone number, tap on your phone number to activate iMessage for your number.

Reboot your phone to apply the recent changes you’ve made and then try and see if iMessage is already working as intended.

Signing out of your Apple ID and back in can also be an option if iMessage still failed to work. To do so, head back to Settings-> Messages, then tap to open Send & Receive menu. Navigate to the Apple ID section then tap the option to Sign Out.

This will log you out from your Apple ID account. Afterwards, sign back in using your Apple ID and try sending an iMessage to any one of your iPhone contacts.
