Audio problems in mobile devices such as poor sound quality, static noises, muffled sounds or no sound at all may occur due to a defective hardware component and likewise software bugs. The latter is usually the underlying cause when it comes to new high-end devices like Apple’s latest iPhone X handset. But there are also a few cases where the main issue is tied to a faulty audio component in use. Bad updates are also among the possible triggers. Hence there are only two possibilities that you need to consider. If it’s not the hardware, then the problem must be tied to some software glitches. In most cases however, the no sound problem is only isolated to an app. To find out more on how audio problems instigate on your new iPhone, I encourage you to read this entire context. I’ve also highlighted some generic solutions that you can refer to whenever you would opt to troubleshoot relevant issues particularly a no sound problem on your iPhone X.

First solution: Soft reset/iPhone restart.
A soft reset or device restart might be the only thing that’s needed to get your iPhone’s audio system back up and working properly again. Problems like this can occur among other random minor glitches on the iPhone system. And a simple solution to that is a device restart or soft reset. If you haven’t already, then you must do so with these steps:
- Press the Power/Side button and either Volume buttons simultaneously for a few seconds.
- When the Slide to Power Off option appears on the screen, swipe right on the slider to turn off your device.
- After 30 seconds, press the Side/Power button again to turn it back on.
The iOS 11 also offers a new way for users to restart their iPhone through settings. Here’s how it’s done:
- Tap to open Settings app.
- Tap General.
- Scroll down and tap Shut Down. Your iPhone will then power down.
- After 30 seconds, press the Side/Power button on the right side of your iPhone to turn it back on.
Both methods will not affect any of your iPhone data stored on the internal memory so everything should remain intact afterwards.
Second solution: Toggle Bluetooth on or off.
With Bluetooth on or enabled on your iPhone, it is but possible that your device is currently paired with or connected to a Bluetooth speaker or accessory hence its sound or audio outputs are routed to the other Bluetooth device it’s connected to. To rule this out from the possible cause, just turn Bluetooth off and see how your iPhone’s sound system does. Here’s what you should do then:
- Tap to open the Settings app.
- Tap Bluetooth.
- Then tap the Bluetooth switch to turn the feature on or off.
- If it’s turned on, then tap the switch to turn Bluetooth off.
Test your iPhone afterwards. If the audio problem persists or your iPhone X still has no sound after toggling Bluetooth on or off, then try the next procedure.
Third solution: Quit all background apps.
Background apps when become corrupted can crash and eventually cause conflict to other apps or iPhone functions. If the problem occurs only when using certain app, then it’s an isolated issue on the app. It could be just a minor app glitch, which can be remedied by ending and restarting apps on your device.
To eliminate background apps from the possible triggers, try to quit them on your iPhone X with these steps:
- Tap and hold on any app icon on the Home screen.
- When the app icons start to jiggle, tap the X in the edge of the app you want to uninstall.
- Tap Delete to confirm action.
Alternatively, you can check for updates and then install apps updates available on your device. To do so, head over the App Store and see if apps updates are available.
Fourth solution: Reset all settings on your iPhone X.
Your iPhone may not produce any sound because it’s set to do so beforehand. You may consider this as the main reason why your iPhone X has no sound if it occurs after you made some changes to your iPhone settings. You might have configured certain options incorrectly so it needs to be modified or corrected. Your options in this case would be either to revert the changes you’ve made back to how they were configured before the onset of the problem. But if that’s difficult for you to do so, then you can just reset all settings on your iPhone X with these steps:
- Tap Settings from the Home screen.
- Tap General.
- Tap Reset.
- Select the option to Reset All Settings.
- If prompted, enter the correct passcode for your device.
- Tap Reset All Settings to confirm.
This reset restores your iPhone settings back to their original default configurations without deleting any of your critical data and personal information. However, you will need to set up your iPhone settings including Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and other settings.
Fifth solution: Update your iPhone X to the latest iOS version.
Aside from apps updates, you can also try updating your iPhone X iOS to the latest version available. So far, the latest iOS version rolled out since March 29th of this year is iOS 11.3. It’s available over-the-air (OTA) thus can be downloaded and installed wirelessly on your device. Here’s how to check for available updates on your iPhone X:
- Tap Settings from the Home screen.
- Tap General.
- Tap Software Update.
If an update is available, read and review the update notification, back up your data, then download and install the new update on your iPhone. You can do so through settings menu or using iTunes on your computer.
What about a Factory reset or iOS restore?
You may opt to proceed with a master reset or reset your iPhone X to its factory default settings if the problem persists after performing all prior procedures. A full system reset can potentially resolve the underlying cause if it’s due to a major system error that’s causing conflict with your iPhone’s audio functions. If a master reset would fail, then you may proceed with an iOS restore through iTunes. In order to do so, you will need to secure a computer with the latest version of iTunes software installed. And when everything is set, connect your iPhone X to the computer using the Apple-supplied USB cable, wait until it’s recognized in iTunes, then follow the onscreen instructions to reset or restore your iPhone X to a previous iOS backup.

You may opt to contact and escalate the problem to Apple Support, if you think it’s triggered by a bad update like when it started to occur after installing the latest iOS version for your iPhone X. This might be a bug that needs to be rectified by a fix patch from Apple, which will likely be offered through a follow-up minor update.
