No sound and other audio problems on an iPhone can be due to a software error or bad hardware. To determine whether it’s attributed to the software or hardware, try to recall what happened prior to the onset of the very first symptom. For example, did it occur after you dropped your iPhone or got it wet accidentally? Or did it instigate after making changes to your iPhone settings. If it falls on the first, then the no sound problem is most likely inflicted by hardware damage, which therefore denotes the need for service. Otherwise, you will need to deal with a software issue.

How to troubleshoot iPhone 7 Plus with no sound after iOS update
Before you start troubleshooting, test to see if your iPhone speaker is working or not. To do so, navigate to Settings-> Sounds or Settings-> Sounds & Haptics, then drag the Ringer and Alerts slider up or down several times.
If you don’t hear any sound, then your speaker might have been damaged and therefore needs service. Otherwise, try these subsequent workarounds to troubleshoot your iPhone software and test the sound after each method.
First solution: Perform a soft reset or reboot your iPhone 7 Plus.
A device restart or soft reset is the recommended last step when making software changes on any device. Doing so clears up the internal memory and refresh the system functions. Any minor glitches from updating will also be cleared in the process. If you haven’t yet restarted your iPhone after updating iOS, then you should do so with these steps:
- Press and hold the Power button for a few seconds until the Slide to Power Off button appears.
- Drag the slider to turn off your iPhone completely.
- After 30 seconds, press and hold the Power button and then release when the Apple logo appears.
Allow your device to finish booting up and then test to see if the audio functions are already working properly. If not, then move on to the next applicable solution.
Second solution: Check and manage sound settings on your iPhone 7 Plus.
Your iPhone settings, including audio/sound settings might have been automatically altered or overridden by the update. Unfortunately the output is not good since your iPhone ended up having no sound. What you can do then is to verify your iPhone settings and if necessary, configure sound options back to how they were before the new update was installed.
You can first try flipping the ringer switch to turn silent mode on for a few seconds and then flip the switch back to ring mode. Also try pressing the Volume buttons, particularly Volume Up to make sure it’s not set to the lowest level (mute). Doing so will increase the earpiece volume while on a call, media volume when streaming music or videos, and ringtone volume. Many people have found wonders from doing these simple tricks, so that might be worth a shot.
Another thing you can do is to check and manage audio settings and sound options including Do Not Disturb feature.
To do so, head over to Settings-> Do Not Disturb menu and then make sure that Do Not Disturb feature is off or disabled. Your iPhone may still not be able to play sound if DND feature is turned on unless you’ve set some exceptions. That can be ruled out by turning DND off on your iPhone.
If the no sound problem only occurs to a certain app, then you may need to configure relevant settings from within the app to make it sound.
Third solution: Turn Bluetooth off, if necessary.
You won’t hear any sound from your iPhone speaker if it’s paired or connected to a Bluetooth-enabled audio device because the audio output will be routed to the latter device. To make sure this is not what’s causing your trouble, turn Bluetooth off on your iPhone 7 Plus to remove pairing and enable audio outputs to the built-in speaker.
To do so, head over to Settings-> Bluetooth menu and then tap the Bluetooth switch to turn the feature off.
Restart your iPhone and then test to see if you can now hear it sounds.
Fourth solution: Reset all settings on your iPhone 7 Plus.
To rule invalid settings out from the underlying cause, resetting all settings on your iPhone can help. This will delete all your customized options and configurations then restore the default or original values. Unlike a master reset, a system settings reset won’t affect your iPhone data and so you won’t lose any critical files you saved on the internal memory of your device. Here’s how it’s done:
- Tap Settings.
- Tap General.
- Scroll to and tap Reset.
- Select the option to Reset All Settings.
- Enter your device passcode, if prompted.
- Then tap to confirm system settings reset.
Wait until the reset is finished then restart your iPhone. After the restart, you will need to configure some settings and enable necessary options according to your preferences. If everything is set, test your iPhone to see if audio functions are already working.
Fifth solution: Restore your iPhone 7 Plus using iTunes.
As your last resort, you can perform an iOS restore to wipe your iPhone and restore from a previous iOS backup or set it up as new. The update might have totally messed up the system settings and so a full system reset would be necessary. You may opt to restore your iPhone in recovery mode or perform a DFU mode restore through iTunes then. A more detailed walkthrough on how to perform a recovery mode restore and DFU mode restore is available on our iPhone 7 Plus Tutorials section in this site. Just visit our Troubleshooting Page for more details.
Escalate the problem to Apple Support or your carrier so that they can make further assessments and if necessary, tag it among other post-update issues for immediate fixing. It’s possible that the new iOS update has some bugs that caused audio malfunctions on your iPhone 7 Plus. Ask for further recommendations and/or temporary solutions.
Alternatively, you can take your iPhone to an Apple Genius bar nearby and have it examined by an authorized technician. Doing so will rule hardware damage or damaged speakers out from the underlying causes. It is but also possible that your device has obtained some sort of physical or liquid damage from a previous instance of accidental drops or liquid exposure and it just happened coincidentally that the symptoms occurred after implementing the new iOS update on your device. That said, hardware checkup is also needed.
