If you’re constantly bothered by intrusive salespersons, past acquaintances, or immature trolls, you can block their numbers by following the instructions bellow. As an iPhone user, you have several different ways how to block a number, including one first-party solution from Apple.
All GSM-enabled iOS devices come with the option to block a phone number or contact from contacting you by a phone call, FaceTime, or iMessage.
- Phone – Open the Phone app. Tap the information icon next to the phone number you want to block. Select the Block this Caller option from the list.
- FaceTime – Open the FaceTime app. Tap the information icon next to the phone number you want to block. Select the Block this Caller option from the list.
- iMessage – Open the iMessage app. Tap the information icon next to the phone number you want to block. Select the Block this Caller option from the list.
You can manage your blocked phone numbers and contacts from the Settings app. Apple also lets you automatically filter iMessages from unknown senders by activating the Filter Unknown Senders option in the settings menu of the iMessage app. For more information, visit the official support page.
Block from Carrier
It’s convenient to block someone using the Block this Caller option provided by Apple, but as soon as you switch to a different device and forget to reapply the settings, the person is free to bother you again. If you want to be more thorough, it’s a good idea to block a number from your carrier.
These days, most carriers let you do this instantly using an online web interface. For example, if you are a Verizon customer, all you need to do is navigate to Manage Verizon Family Safeguards & Controls and click on the View Details & Edit option located in the Call & Message Blocking section. There, you can enter up to 5 phone numbers that you would like to block.
Caller ID Apps
If you would like to take a more proactive role in your defense against unwanted phone calls and messages, you should try using a dedicated caller ID app for iOS. These apps can automatically detect numbers that belong to telemarketers, scammers, and robocallers and block them before they reach you.
Designed to leverage all the features of the latest iOS, Hiya is an advanced call blocker with integrated scam identification, personalized blocklist, native dialer integration, customized called ID, and more. The app relies on the world’s most advanced phone spam protection engine to accurately distinguish malicious phone calls from legitimate ones. Users praise its polished user interface, accuracy, and reliability.
Trusted by over 250 million users from around the world, Truecaller automatically identifies spam and fraud calls before they reach you. The app is deeply integrated into the iOS operating system, allowing you to lookup phone numbers directly from your native call history, as well as copy a number and look at the Truecaller widget to see contact details.
Do Not Call Registry
Established by the U.S. Federal Trade Commission (FTC) in 2003, the National Do Not Call Registry is intended to limit the telemarketing calls U.S. consumers receive. Anyone can register either by calling 1-888-382-1222 or visiting the official website. In theory, all telemarketing companies operating in the United States should ignore numbers that appear on this list, but the reality is often quite different. You will most likely still get some unsolicited calls, but, hopefully, not as many as before.
