Sound issues on the #iPhone8 can take many forms and in today’s troubleshooting guide, we cover a few of them specifically the ones mentioned in the post below. In general, sound problems, as long as they’re not of hardware kind, can be fixed by doing some software troubleshooting. Software solutions are the ones we provide here so if nothing will change after doing all of them, you should assume bad hardware is to blame. To address hardware issues, you should always let Apple handle it. In many cases, inexperienced third party technicians may end up causing more problems than solutions. The worst thing is the fact that Apple will no longer entertain any repair request if they realize that a device has been opened by a non-Apple tech. That will leave you stranded if you can’t find good enough third party technician to take care of the issue. So, when it comes to iPhone repair, go Apple all the way.

Problem #1: iPhone 8 Plus speaker volume does not work, can’t hear callers
I have an iPhone 8 plus that is a little less than 4 months old. Over the past month I have been having nothing but problems with it since the new upgrade. My speaker/volume don’t work. I can’t place calls or and when people call the phone doesn’t ring and i hear nothing on the other line. It sometimes also makes a static crackling sound and then my home button won’t push it.
One more thing, my phone continues to reset on its own, takes forever. When I power it off sometimes it won’t turn on or takes forever to turn on. When I try the hard reset, volume up, volume down then hold down the power key it does nothing, won’t even turn my phone on. I’m extremely frustrated, this is my first Iphone, its brand new and I’ve never had so many problems. Thanks. — Meagan Carter
Solution: Hi Meagan. Taken together, the symptoms you mention look like signs of a failing hardware. If you’re positive that they started only after installing an update, there’s a few solution options that you can try.
Reset all settings
This should be the first thing that you need to do. Resetting all settings on your iPhone 8 returns major software settings to their defaults without actually the hassle of a full Factory Reset or Recovery. If the main reason for all these issues lies on the software, there’s a fair chance that resetting all settings may help. Here’s how it’s done:
- Open Settings app.
- Tap General.
- Tap Reset All Settings.
- Enter your passcode if prompted.
- Tap Reset All Settings to confirm.
- Now wait for the device to reset the software and check for the problem.
Should nothing change after resetting all settings, the next logical step to do is to perform a complete wipe, also known as factory reset. Aside from resetting all software settings to their known working default state, this will also delete downloaded apps and personal data. In effect, you are basically rebooting the entire system and returning everything back to their pristine state. We know for a fact that the symptoms you mention won’t exist in factory state software so this is an effective way to get rid of bugs that cause the issues you’re experiencing.
Remember, factory reset will delete your files such as photos, videos, documents, etc. so make sure that you back them up ahead of time. If you still have plenty of space left in your iCloud account, you can use it to back your personal data. Otherwise, just use iTunes on your computer to keep a backup of your data.
Once you’re ready, follow the steps below on how to factory reset your iPhone 8:
- Open Settings app.
- Tap General.
- Tap Reset.
- Tap Erase All Content and Settings.
- If prompted, enter your passcode.
- Tap Erase iPhone.
Get professional help
If the two solutions above won’t fix the problems at all, it’s a sign that you need professional help to check your phone’s hardware. If you purchased the device brand new, it must still be under Apple’s standard one-year warranty so make sure that only their service center check your device.
Problem #2: iPhone 8 calls don’t ring and goes directly to voicemail
Some of my incoming phone calls do not ring on my phone at all but go immediately to voice mail. I tried to report this issue to my carrier, Telus, but they have a call-back system and two of their calls did not ring but went to voice mail. Also, yesterday, April 20, the seniors’ residence where my aunt lives tried to call me about a health issue and the call went straight to voice mail. However, in this case the voice message did not show up on my phone until a few hours after the call was made. — Joan Broadley
Solution: Hi Joan. Most voicemail issues that iPhone users encounter is network-related but in some other times, it may also be a device or app glitch. Below are the possible troubleshooting steps that you can try.
Restart your device
Rebooting your iPhone should be the first thing that you must do. Many app or network issues are fixed by simply restarting an iPhone. It’s simple and easy to do so make sure you do it before doing the rest of the troubleshooting steps below.
Force quit voicemail app
Restarting the app in question should be the next move. Because your issue is obviously involving voicemail, you should force quit the voicemail in this situation. Here’s how it’s done:
- Double click the Home button to bring up the fast app switcher.
- Navigate to the app screen you want to quit.
- Swipe up on the app card you wish to shut down by flicking it up and off the screen.
- Restart your iPhone 8 and check for the problem.
Install updates for all apps including voicemail
Should the issue remain after doing the suggestions above, the next good thing to do is not to miss on app updates, especially for your voicemail app.
To check for app updates:
- Open App Store app.
- At the bottom, tap the Updates tab.
- Tap Update All at the upper right to update all apps. If you want to update only the voicemail app, tap the UPDATE button at the right.
Install system updates
Another good way to minimize bugs in a system is to keep it up-to-date all the time. With such a powerful phone, there’s really no point holding off system updates at this time. By default, iPhones are supposed to download and install iOS updates automatically but if you changed it before, be sure to under Settings > General > Software update.
Reset network settings
To cover for the possibility that there may be a network issue causing the problem, make sure to also reset your device’s network settings. Here’s how:
- Tap Settings to open the app.
- Tap General.
- Tap Reset.
- Select the option to Reset Network Settings.
- If prompted, enter the device password.
- Confirm action.
Contact your carrier
If your voicemail still remains erratic, you have exert all effort to contact your carrier and get support from them. If you can’t call them for some reason, try to do some research to see if you can get assistance via other means like email, chat, or their social service pages.
