How to fix iPhone 8 Plus that’s having errors during email setup

Before you begin to troubleshoot software errors that might have prevented you from completing the email setup process, verify and ensure that your iPhone is connected to the Internet. The mail app has to sync with your webmail server during the setup and if there’s no Internet connection, then definitely the mail app and the webmail servers couldn’t establish communication. And this is where email setup errors transpire. To rule this thing out, try refreshing your Internet connection by either rebooting your wireless router or disable and enable Wi-Fi on your iPhone 8 Plus for a few seconds. Don’t forget to do some test browsing to see whether or not you can access online sites. If your iPhone is connected yet still unable to complete the email setup process, then move on and try some workarounds including the ones I’ve subsequently demonstrated in this context.

First solution: Try to set up your email account manually.

Before you start the manual email setup, quit all background apps including the Mail app from your iPhone. Doing so will prevent any of them from causing conflict during the setup process. After your iPhone boots up completely, manually set up your email account on your iPhone 8 Plus with these steps:

  1. Tap Settings from the Home screen.
  2. Tap Accounts & Passwords.
  3. Tap Add Account.
  4. Select Other from the given email services options.
  5. Tap on Add Mail Account.
  6. Enter the required information including your name, email address, password and account description.
  7. Tap Next to continue.
  8. Wait for the Mail app to look for the email settings and complete the account setup.
  9. If prompted, tap Done to complete the email setup process.

If Mail cannot find the email settings, then this is when you have to enter the email settings manually. Continue with these steps then:

  1. Tap Next from the previous menu.
  2. Select IMAP or POP for your new account type. You can verify your email account type from your carrier/email service provider.
  3. Enter the correct server information for the Incoming Mail Server and Outgoing Mail Server. Again if you can get this information from your carrier or service provider.
  4. Then tap Next.
  5. Wait for the Mail app to verify your server settings. If they are correct, tap Save to finish the setup.
  6. If the email settings are incorrect, you will be prompted to make necessary corrections. After you made the changes, tap Save again.

Second solution: Reset your email password on webmail.

Log into your email account through webmail and then look for the option to reset your email account password. Usually you will be prompted with online instructions or link for password reset completion. After you successfully reset your email password, try to set up your email account on your iPhone 8 Plus manually and then enter the new password on the password field. The password you entered during the email setup in the Mail app must be the same password you used to log into your email account through webmail.

Third solution: Modify SMTP port numbers.

There are times when the default value for SMTP port won’t work so needs to be changed. Port numbers may vary from carrier to carrier or between email service providers. Usually port numbers are already provided in their respective fields during automatic email setup but then again things can go wrong and that’s when you will need to try to use other port numbers and see if that works.  Common port number for incoming mail for IMAP accounts are 143 and 993 while for POP accounts are 110 and 995. Port numbers for the outgoing mail server for outgoing mail are 25, 465, and 587. You can try switching between these numbers and see which would render a positive output. Here’s how to manage and edit the port numbers on your email settings:

  1. Tap to open the Settings app.
  2. Tap Accounts & Passwords.
  3. Tap Add account to and your email account.
  4. If you’ve already setup your email account and want to change the incoming and outgoing server settings, tap on your email account to edit settings from.
  5. Tap Account then make the necessary changes to the incoming and outgoing server settings, particularly the port number. If you cannot find the server settings from this menu, then try to go to the Advanced section instead.
  6. When you’re done making necessary changes, tap Done to save them.

Restart your iPhone after you made all these changes then try to see if that fixes the problem.

Fourth solution: Remove other email accounts from your iPhone.

Removing other email accounts that are saved on your iPhone can be the key to fixing errors that are attributed to account information conflicts. This will also help you isolate whether or not the problem is associated with any of the existing emails or your email account itself. So here’s what you should do then:

  1. Tap to open the Settings app.
  2. Tap Accounts & Passwords.
  3. Tap to select the email account you want to delete.
  4. Tap the option to Delete Account.
  5. Then confirm action by tapping on Delete from My iPhone.
  6. If you see other email accounts in the list, then you might as well consider deleting them all to prevent any of them from causing conflict.
  7. Tap Done to save the recent changes you’ve made.

Again, restart your iPhone 8 Plus to refresh your device memory and to give it a clean start.

Fifth solution:  Master reset or restore your iPhone to factory defaults.

As your last option, you may resort to a factory reset or master reset. Doing will allow you to set up everything including your email account from scratch. But before you do so, don’t forget to back up all your important data and personal information because they will all be deleted in the process. Once you’ve got everything backed up and set, follow these steps to perform a factory reset via settings on your iPhone 8 Plus. Here’s how:

  1. Tap Settings from the Home screen.
  2. Tap General.
  3. Scroll to and tap Reset.
  4. Select the option to Erase all content and settings.
  5. If prompted, enter the correct passcode for your device to continue.
  6. Then tap the option to confirm iPhone reset.

When the reset is finished your iPhone restarts by itself. By then you can proceed with the initial setup process. Just follow the setup wizard to complete the email setup.

Meanwhile, if you are starting to have problems setting up or adding new email accounts after updating your iPhone to the latest iOS version, then most likely it’s a post update issue that needs to be escalated to Apple Support for immediate fixing. Post-update issues are typically addressed by a fix patch that comes along with the next minor software update rollout.

Seek more help

Contact your email service provider or carrier for further assistance if you still failed to set up email account on your iPhone 8 Plus. There might be some settings for your email account that need to be reset using an email reset tool on your carrier’s end. If you are seeing any error prompts or codes, take note of the error as they will serve as clues that let you know of what went wrong and what to work on. Your carrier would be able to walk you through a more advanced email troubleshooting procedure using some dedicated email software to fix the problem, if necessary.
