Some #iPhoneX users have recently notified us that they’re getting “unable to verify update” bug. We understand that this has been a recurring issue with other iPhone models in the past and fortunately, it’s relatively easy to fix. Things to prepare
In order to fix “unable to verify update” error, there are some things that you need to prepare. This is to ensure that everything is working when you’ve actually started on the fix. Below are items that should be in order.
- Charge your iPhone X to 100%.
- Connect your iPhone X to a reliable wifi. Try to avoid using public wifi networks as they can disconnect anytime. If possible, use your home wifi. Also, try not to use mobile data when updating.
- Ensure that you have more than enough storage space left before you update. Some operating system updates are quite big and they may need at least 1GB. Try to have a minimum of free 2GB space to allow for your device to also install updates for apps later on.
- Make to create a backup of your personal files (such as photos, videos, etc.) before doing an update, or before restoring the operating system. We suggest that you back your files up using both iTunes and iCloud.
Once all the items above are taken care of, you can then proceed to do the solutions below.
Fix #1: Force close Settings app
“Unable to verify update” bug often occurs due to Settings app not working properly. If this error occurs on your iPhone X while trying to update its software, be sure to force quit Settings app. To do that, here are the steps:
- From the Home screen, swipe up and pause.
- Firmly touch and hold the app, then tap the close icon (red circle with a minus sign). You can also swipe up to close the app as soon as you see.
- Install the update again.
Fix #2: Reset your iPhone X RAM
Random Access Memory or RAM sometimes plays a part in causing update errors. If your iPhone X encounters “unable to verify update” error when trying to install an update, be sure to clear its memory (RAM). This is the next logical step that you can do if force closing Settings app won’t help. This troubleshooting step is useful when you notice your iPhone has slowed down, or if it’s having update issues.
Flushing your iPhone X memory is easy to do. Here’s how it’s done:
- Set up your iPhone X virtual Home button. This is an important step since your iPhone X does not have a physical Home button unlike the older iPhone models. To set the virtual Home button up, you must go under Settings > General > Accessibility > AssistiveTouch and make sure that Home button is On. Then, select Single-Tap and assign the Home button action to it. This will add a new white dot to the screen which functions just like the physical Home button.
- Once the AssistiveTouch button is all set up, you need to tap it. This will bring up a number of options including the virtual Home button. Then, go back to the root of Settings > General and find the Shut Down option. Tap Shut Down option.
- The standard options should show the “slide to power off” interface but you can ignore it and instead tap the AssistiveTouch button to reveal more options.
- Press and hold the Home button. This will make the screen flash black and white before eventually bringing you back to the Settings screen. This is your indicator that your iPhone X’s RAM has been flushed.
Fix #3: Reset network settings
Some iPhone users in the past were able to successfully fix “unable to verify update” bug by resetting the network settings. There’s a good chance that the error may be caused by an issue with the network. To reset network settings:
- Open Settings app.
- Tap Reset.
- Tap Reset Network Settings.
- Tap Reset.
Resetting your iPhone X network settings means clearing the device’s wifi passwords as well as other cellular network configurations. If you’re using VPN, the settings will also be deleted so be sure that you know how to set them back up before you do the steps above.
Fix #4: Delete the update
At times, intermittent connection or other reasons can cause update files to become corrupted. So, when the time comes that your iPhone X does the installation, it eventually results to update failure or error. If the steps above won’t help fix “unable to verify update” error at this point, be sure to delete the current update you’ve downloaded. This will force your phone to redownload the update afterwards. Hopefully, it will get a good set of update files this time to allow its installation to proceed properly.
To delete the update:
- Open Settings.
- Tap General.
- Tap Storage & iCloud Usage.
- Tap Manage Storage and look for Software Update.
- Tap Software Update.
- Tap Delete Update.
- Redownload the update and install it.
Fix #5: Factory reset and restore
Ideally, “unable to verify update” error should already be fixed by now. However, if it still remains, your final option would be to factory reset your device and restore it from an old back up.
To factory reset your device, follow these steps:
- Open Settings app.
- Tap General.
- Tap Reset.
- Tap Erase All Content and Settings.
- If prompted, enter your passcode.
- Tap Erase iPhone.
Once you’ve factory reset your device, you can either restore it from an old backup or set it up as a new device. To restore your iPhone X, these are the general steps on how to do it:
- Connect your iPhone to your computer with the cable that came with your phone.
- We assume you remember your phone’s passcode so simply enter it when you’re prompted for it.
- Select your iPhone once iTunes asks you for the specific device.
- Once you’re in the Summary panel or screen, select the option that will restore your device (Restore).
- Confirm by clicking on Restore button.
- Wait for a few moments while iTunes restores your device to its factory settings. It may also take some time if iTunes will need to install an updated operating system version.
- After this factory reset, all software settings should be restored to their defaults.
