iPhone 7 can’t receive emails once they’re downloaded to computer first, other issues

Hello and welcome to today’s #iPhone7 troubleshooting article. Due to an increasing number of email-related problems lately, here’s one brief troubleshooting guide for some particular email troubles reported to us. As usual, this is not an exhaustive guide for all email problems in iPhone 7 out there but is only a compilation of a number of problems and their solutions. We hope you’ll find something helpful in it.

Before we proceed let us remind you that you can contact us by using the link provided at the bottom of this page. When describing your issue, please be as detailed as possible so we can easily pinpoint a relevant solution. If you can, kindly include the exact error messages you are getting to give us an idea where to start. If you have already tried some troubleshooting steps before emailing us, make sure to mention them so we can skip them in our answers.

Problem 1: iPhone 7 email app keeps crashing, won’t open at all

The email app (pre-installed on iphone 7) is not working anymore. When pressed, it pops up and close immediately (sometimes I could see for a couple of seconds the emails received). I turn it off, I reinstalled the app, reset the account, buying additional storage on iCloud – nothing works for long. After reinstalling the app ( takes few hours to get back all contacts) it works for days or even some weeks – than, bang! My email account is a company account and all emails are coming from company’s server. I triple checked with IT and they gave up — no solution. These days, similar problem appeared to one of my colleagues – it was solved through a reinstallation of email app – I do expect to happen again. Any clues ? It is obvious is not a hardware problem. — Emil

Solution: Hi Emil. Without history and intimate knowledge of your device, there’s no way we’ll be able to pinpoint where the problem may be coming from. You’ve apparently already tried the basic troubleshooting steps so either this is unknown bug that Apple has not anticipated recently, or something that’s caused by an error or bug from your email server.

If your IT department is at a loss and they can’t seem to figure out the reason for the trouble, any support group like us are at a much worse position to help you. We don’t have access to errors and logs in your system and even if we may have, there’s a chance that we may not be able to interpret them to come up with an answer.

To check if it’s something with the email app you’re using, consider using a different email client. There are many free email clients that you can try such as Microsoft’s Outlook or Google’s Gmail apps in the App Store. If any of them will succumb to the same symptom, you should continue working with your IT guys to find a fix.

Problem 2: iPhone 7 can’t receive emails once they’re downloaded to computer first

First I want to thank you for helping. My dad, 74 years old, is freaking out because my twin brother checked his yahoo account on his home computer. When he logged back on, it brought up his yahoo account.  I was able to clear his account and get my dad’s to pop back up without logging in. Since then, emails go to his computer like they should but will not come to his phone. I am currently in school full time and work during the day, Friday, Saturday, and Sunday nights so I only have 20 mins a day (during my lunch) to fix problem. I have tried everything I know but can’t figure it out. Please, Please, Please for the love of us patient people out there can you please tell me how I can automatically get my dads emails on his computer to send to his cell phone. I know it is easy but I just can’t figure it out. Thank you so much, Geoffrey Yoste

Solution: Hi Geoffrey. We can’t think of any reason why accessing a Yahoo account in a computer will stop emails from coming in a previously setup email account in an iPhone but the best thing that you can do right now is to set the phone up again. First, you want to make sure that your dad’s email is NOT set up to use POP3 in his computer. If his email was set up this way, any new incoming emails that may be opened by the first device, like his computer, will be downloaded to it only. This means that he may not be able to access them at all in his phone if his computer is the first to fetch the messages. To resolve the issue, you have to set the email again using IMAP. Be sure to delete your dad’s email account from the email application first. Keep in mind that removing his email account will delete emails stored locally in the computer so be sure to back them up first. Messages that are stored in Yahoo’s servers will still be there though. Once you’ve deleted the account, you can then re-add the email account. To add it using IMAP download protocol, refer to the information in this page: IMAP server settings for Yahoo Mail.

Then you need to work on you dad’s iPhone and do similar steps. Essentially, you want to ensure that his Yahoo account is also using IMAP so if it’s not, delete it from iOS Mail app, then re-add it. To check if your email is a POP3 account, go to Settings > Accounts & Passwords, tap your account, tap Account, then look for the label POP Account Information. The same IMAP settings provided above can be used to set your dad’s Yahoo account in his iPhone.

Now that you’ve set his Yahoo account in both devices, each of them will be capable of accessing his emails. Remember, using POP3 will only allow one device to check emails at a time. If your dad checks his emails with at least 2 devices, he must use IMAP everytime he sets his email account up.

Problem 3: iPhone 7 can’t send email, showing “Cannot send email….” error

I cannot send email from my Apple iPhone 7. Every time I try to send a message the error code is”Cannot Send Mail. The user name or password for linda.goble@aol.com is incorrect.” I have no problems receiving, just sending. When I send a message from my AOL email (same info’ as my phone) there is no problem sending. Messages sent from my computer will appear on my phone even though sent from computer. I use my iPhone much more than my computer so it’s difficult not being able to send a message. This problem started about 2 weeks ago. I tried your troubleshooting page… with no luck. Should I close my account on my phone and start over? Still want the same connection with/to my computer. I NEED HELP/ Thank you. — Linda

Solution: Hi Linda. The Cannot Send Mail. The user name or password for linda.goble@aol.com is incorrect. error is most likely due to incorrect settings in your Mail app. To troubleshoot it, follow these steps:

Step #1: Check Mail app’s Outbox

Outbox is the opposite of Inbox. Basically, it’s a folder that keeps unsent emails so you can send them again at a later time. To see the emails you’re trying to send are stuck in Outbook, you can do the following:

  1. In Mail, tap Mailboxes in the upper-left corner.
  2. Tap Outbox. If you don’t see an Outbox, then your email was sent.
  3. Tap an email in the Outbox. Make sure that the recipient’s email address is correct.
  4. Tap Send.

Step #2: Verify Mail app settings are correct

When setting up your email account for the first time, Mail app tries to make it as convenient as possible by doing all the heavy lifting in the background such as ensuring that all server settings are in place. To do that, you should manually check the settings of the Mail app and compare them to the settings for your particular email account. Here’s how:

  1. Open the Settings app.
  2. Tap Accounts & Passwords.
  3. Tap your email account.
  4. Tap the email address next to your account. This will show relevant account information that you must recheck.
  5. Then, open your Safari browser and use Apple’s Mail Settings Lookup tool. Compare the settings in the displayed page and make sure that they’re the same with the settings on your phone.

Step #3: Set your email account up again

This is a drastic solution that you can try so make sure that you’ll not lose important emails when doing this step. This is especially important if you set your account up using POP3 instead of IMAP. If it’s using POP3, that means that the emails viewed by this phone may only be available in this device. Make sure that you have copies of them in the server, or somewhere else before removing your account.

Once you’ve created a backup of important emails, you can then open the Settings app, then go to Accounts & Passwords. Then, you want to tap your email account so you can remove it. To remove, tap Delete Account. After that, add your account again.

 

Step #4: Get support from your email service provider

Should Steps 1-3 won’t help at all, contact AOL and make sure that there’s no issue with your account.
