Many people would prefer to use the built-in Mail app on their iPhone to get their emails. But even if the app is designed to be as simple and easy to use, problems can still arise. Some people often run into connection issues resulting to failure in sending and receiving emails while others couldn’t even get to finish the email setup process. In this content, we will attempt to address a pertinent issue on the iPhone 7 Plus in which the email setup process couldn’t be completed or ended up with email setup errors. If you think you need help with the same matter, then keep reading.
Two of the main reasons as to why you may not be able to set up an email account on your iPhone 7 Plus are network errors and incorrect email server settings being used. An active Internet connection is required for your device to communicate with the email server and vice versa. The same thing can happen if you’ve manually set up the email on your device and the email server settings you’ve entered are incorrect.

What to do if you cannot set up email on your iPhone 7 Plus?
If you are prompted with any error codes or messages, read and review the message so that you will know what went wrong and what needs to be done in order to complete the email setup successfully. Otherwise, try performing the subsequent workarounds.
First method: Make sure that you have network connections.
Check and ensure that your iPhone can connect to the Internet either thru Wi-Fi or mobile data. It has to be connected so that it’ll be able to communicate and sync with your email server. If you’re on Wi-Fi, head over to your iPhone Settings-> Wi-Fi menu. Try to turn Wi-Fi off for a few seconds and then turn on again. This will help refresh the Internet connection on your iPhone.
If you’re using mobile data connection for Internet access, then go to Settings-> Cellular and then tap the switch to turn on and use Cellular Data on your device. You may incur additional charges for doing so. Afterwards, reboot your iPhone and then retry setting up your email account.
Second method: Verify or update your password.
The password for your email account is the same password you’ve used and set up for your webmail account. That said, try to log into the same email account through webmail. If you can successfully log in through webmail, then try to reset your password on webmail. Then go back to your iPhone and set up your email account on the Mail app again.
The process of changing email passwords may vary depending on your email service provider or the type of email you have. But generally, you will need to log in to your webmail account and then go to My Account security settings. Finally, look for the Password or Change Password option and follow the onscreen instructions to complete the password reset.
Third method: Remove other email accounts from your device.
If you have set up other emails on your device before, then try to remove them first. It is possible that any of these email accounts has crashed or caused conflict with your current email settings. To delete an email account on your iPhone 7 Plus, follow these steps:
- Tap to open the Settings app.
- Tap Accounts & Passwords.
- Tap the email account that you want to remove.
- Tap Delete Account twice to confirm email account deletion.
When all your other email accounts have been successfully removed, reboot your iPhone 7 Plus and then set up your current email account again. At this point, opt for manual email setup instead of automatic. In order to proceed with manual email setup, you may consider verifying your email settings, especially server settings and port numbers with your email service provider. Do this to make sure that you are using the correct information and evade from getting errors during the setup process.
Fourth method: Verify and modify your iPhone SMTP Port settings.
If you’ve done the manual email setup already but still couldn’t get your email account to work, try to verify and modify your iPhone SMTP port settings and make sure you are using the correct port numbers. Here’s how:
- Tap Settings.
- Tap Accounts & Passwords.
- Tap to select the email account to configure.
- Tap SMTP and the SMTP server your want to change.
- If you’ve enabled the option to Use SSL, use port 465. Otherwise, turn Use SSL option off. Other SMTP ports for you to try are 80, 3535 or 25.
After making changes to the SMTP port numbers, open the Mail app and check to see if you can send and receive email. If not, then try to use a different port number.
Fifth method: Update to the latest iOS version.
If you haven’t already, then try to check for any available software update for your iPhone 7 Plus. Installing the latest firmware update can help rid of any bugs and glitches that might have hindered you from setting up the email successfully on your device.
To check for available updates, head over to Settings-> General-> Software Update menu on your iPhone 7 Plus.
If an update is available, back up your iPhone data and when everything is set, tap Download and Install option to proceed with the update file download and installation procedures. If your iPhone is already running the latest software, you will see a message telling that the software is up to date.
Sixth method: Reset network settings.
A network settings reset can help rectify errors with your network settings configuration on the iPhone. Again, network error can be the main culprit so it has to be fixed beforehand. If your iPhone is running the latest iOS version, follow these steps to reset the network settings:
- Tap Settings.
- Scroll to and tap General.
- Tap Reset.
- Select the option to Reset Network Settings.
- Tap Reset Network Settings to confirm.
Your iPhone will restart when the network settings reset is complete. Once it turns on, the default network settings are restored. Reconnect to your Wi-Fi network or cellular network and then try to set up your email account again from scratch.
Still doesn’t work?
As temporary resolution if all else failed to fix the problem and you still couldn’t set up your email account on your iPhone 7 Plus Mail app, then you can use other email app for iOS instead. Just determine your email provider or the type of email account you’re trying to set up then download and install the required email app on your device. For example, if your email account is having @gmail.com extension, then it means that your email provider is Gmail and so you can download the Gmail app for your iPhone 7 Plus instead.
