iPhone 7 won’t boot, stuck in Apple logo screen, power drains very quickly

Problem 1: iPhone 7 stuck in boot loop when screen is replaced, power drains very quickly after original battery was replaced

I took my iPhone 7 to a screen repair shop for a minor cracked screen from a short fall. It has been 3 months since the drop and not had any performance issues. My phone is a year old and the battery is well used, so I opted for the battery replacement option because I need a healthy, long lasting battery. 1 hours later my phone was done. When I took it home I noticed that the battery number read out was acting strange between plugging in and leaving it unplugged. Would go from 6%, to 60% after a 5 minute charge. Then down to 20% after a few minutes use.

When I used the phone screen keypad with lighting cable attached, the screen freaks out. When typing a text message, random letters will be pressed and the cursor jumps around in places I didn’t touch. I take it back to the repair shop to see what the heck happened. He said that it was probably the charging port, so he works on it for another 2 hours. I come back to learn that now my phone won’t turn on. It is stuck in a loop with the white Apple logo start screen and back to black. He tried a new screen, didn’t work. Goes back to previous screen, then it works. But the charging function apparently stayed at 70% after 5 minutes. So he tries another screen. Stuck in the loop. It’s the end of the day and he is tired. Tells me he’ll work on it more if I leave it. I decide to take home, but will plan to take it back. I go home with a phone that won’t boot. Stuck in the white apple logo screen loop. What the hack happened? What can I do to fix it? — Ryan Buck

Solution: Hi Ryan. It’s hard to determine what is happening on your device but it clearly has a hardware malfunction. Whether it’s due to an incompatible component or poor connection is for a technician to identify. For a case like this, a technician needs to physically check the device and perform a number of tests to know what’s causing the multiple symptoms you’re getting. It’s possible that the replacement battery may not be compatible, substandard or not in good condition to begin with. The technician may be using parts not validated by Apple causing the system to not recognize them. As it stands, the only option you have is to pray that the technician can rectify his mistakes, or starts to use compatible parts to replace the broken ones. Unless you are amenable to just replace the entire unit completely with a new one, you are stuck with the repair option you have initiated. We don’t think the technician really knows how to troubleshoot an iPhone issue like the one you have but then again, he’s the one who caused further damage to your device in the first place so hopefully he can gather himself and return everything back to normal.

To prevent similar shoddy repair procedure in the future, we strongly recommend that you let Apple handle any repair issue. The main reason why Apple is in a better position to handle repair for Apple devices is the fact that their technicians are trained properly. On top of that qualification, you can be also be assured that the replacement parts will be authentic. In case you’re not aware, it’s very easy to order a cheap Apple part online. A lot of these affordable parts are not properly tested and may fail shortly after being installed. We understand some people may find Apple’s repair cost too high but at least you are guaranteed to receive your device back in good working order. If you want to take a risk and go with a cheaper repair, then you must also be ready to accept the consequences if said repair will go awry.

Your issue is hardware in nature so there’s virtually nothing that we can do to help you directly. We can’t provide hardware troubleshooting and solutions because we are unable to physically inspect the device. Let the technician who handled the repair initially do his job.

Battery drain

In case the technician will be able to fix the screen and manages to make the phone turn on normally but the battery remains erratic, you should consider recalibrating the operating system. This will allow iOS to detect true battery levels accurately afterwards. To do that, follow these steps:

    1. Drain the battery completely. This means using your device until it powers down by its own and the battery level reads 0%.
    2. Charge the phone until it reaches 100%. Be sure to use original charging equipment for your device and let it charge up completely. Do not unplug your device for at least two more hours and also don’t use it while charging.

 

  • After the elapsed time, unplug your device.

 

  1. Perform a warm restart by holding the Power and Home buttons simultaneously until the startup logo appears.
  2. Use your phone until it completely runs out of power again.
  3. Repeat steps 1-5.

Perform a factory reset

Better still, make sure to simply factory reset your iPhone to ensure that all software settings are returned to their default settings. To do that, follow these steps:

  1. Open Settings app.
  2. Tap General.
  3. Tap Reset.
  4. Tap Erase All Content and Settings.
  5. If prompted, enter your passcode.
  6. Tap Erase iPhone.

Problem 2: iPhone 7 won’t boot, stuck in Apple logo screen

My iPhone 7 will not turn on. I have force restarted it multiple times. This started yesterday afternoon. I have turned it completely off for about 8 hours, I let it charge for about 2 hours, and I have even tried to force restart it again (MANY. OTHER. TIMES.). I am clearly getting a little aggravated and frustrated. I have tried everything that has been said on many websites. The only thing that I have not done is go to the Apple store, because it is 7:00 pm and I can’t drive. The thing that is wrong is, my phone will show the Apple logo, go to a black screen, and show the logo again. I am OFFICIALLY out of ideas and options. Nothing will work. Nothing will happen when I turn it back on. And nothing has happened to it recently. It hasn’t been near any kind of liquid, or been dropped or thrown by anyone. The worst part it…. I am leaving tomorrow morning to LEAVE THE STATE and I will be in the car for 7 hours. Can someone please, PLEASE, help me?? — Ryanepeak

Solution: Hi Ryanepeak. Your iPhone does actually turn on but it can’t load the operating system. There are two types of “won’t turn on” issues:

  • No Power
  • No Boot

Yours is clearly the second type. An iPhone No Boot issue may be fixed by a procedure called DFU update. Putting your device into DFU (Device Firmware Update) mode is usually the last resort for those who find their phones stuck in a boot loop or Apple logo screen. To boot to safe mode and update the phone, follow these steps:

  1. In your computer, close all active apps.
  2. Open iTunes.
  3. Turn off your iPhone. If you can’t turn it off normally, let the battery drain to 0% so the phone powers down on its own. Charge the phone for at least an hour without attempting to turn it on.
  4. Connect your iPhone to the computer via USB cable.
  5. Press and hold the Power button for at least 3 seconds.
  6. Press and hold the Volume Down button on the left side of the iPhone while continuing to hold the Power button. Be sure to hold both Power and Volume Down keys for 10 seconds. If Apple logo appears at this time, repeat steps 5 and 6. Apple logo should not show at all.
  7. Continue to hold Volume Down key for another 5 seconds. If the Plug into iTunes screen is displayed, repeat steps 5-7. Plug into iTunes screen should not show up.
  8. You’ll know that your phone is in DFU mode if the screen remains black. Your computer should then tell you that iTunes has detected an iPhone.
  9. Follow the on-screen steps in your computer to do a full recovery.

In a most cases, DFU update fixes problems like the one you’re experiencing. However, if your phone remains stuck and won’t load the operating system at all, you should consider sending it to Apple.
