Hello everybody and welcome to another #iPhone6 troubleshooting article. Today we answer some questions regarding iPhone 6 being unable to function normally due to a number of power-, battery- and charging-related problems.

Problem 1: iPhone 6 stopped working after running Pandora, won’t charge or allow restore after battery replacement
I have an iPhone 6 that stopped working when listening to Pandora. It has never had water damage. Â When listening to music it turned off on its own and had a 70% charge the last time I looked which was long before it shut down. Â I plugged into a charger and it immediately came up saying 100% charged. Â Rebooted and it came on and said 1% charged. Â Left it on the charger and came back to find it was flashing a white screen with a black apple icon. Â Attempted the restore process and it cannot complete the recovery. Â It appears the phone will charge enough to get to the restore screen, however, will shut down because it does not have enough of a charge. Â Leaving the phone on a charger (regardless of several cubes cords and computers used to attempt) it will stay in a loop of a flashing white screen until the battery dies within less than a minute so it does not charge. Â The socket for the charge cord is clean. Â I took the iPhone to an Apple store and they did the same steps and told me to buy another phone. Â I went back to my iPhone 5 instead and would try to fix on my own.
I purchased a new battery online that is OEM and is fully charged. Â This has allowed me to get to the restore process where it is ready to load and the phone reboots. Â This results in the phone going back to the flashing Apple logo and the restore times out. Â So this is two problems that are fighting me that includes a phone that will not charge or accept a restore despite another battery that is fully charged. Â Any assistance would be appreciated. Solution: Hi Stephen. If a new battery replacement did not fix the issue at all, then the next possible reason for the problem may be the phone’s power management IC. This chip is responsible in ensuring that the motherboard and all components receive all their required energy to work. At times, this chip gets damaged due to normal wear and tear, or by sudden input of unregulated power (like what happens in a power surge). A technician must check this chip to ensure that it’s working properly. Otherwise, it has to be replaced. This may be the reason why Apple has recommended a phone replacement. Replacing the power management IC can be tough, especially if there’s no spare component around. It will most likely result to just a motherboard replacement altogether, which is not exactly practical given how expensive an iPhone 6 motherboard is.
If you intend on fixing the problem on your own though, we suggest that you find a website that can walk you through the necessary steps on how to exhaustively diagnose the motherboard. Our blog does not provide hardware troubleshooting and diagnostics at this time. It’s possible that the problem may not be the power management IC at all and could be something entirely different so an in-depth examination of the hardware is necessary.
Problem 2: iPhone 6 drains battery while charging
Initially it was a battery-related issue. I would put my phone on charge and instead of charging, it would start draining my battery. I would put my phone off and then switch it on again and then it would start charging normally. This still happens and it’s not practical for me to keep switching off my phone. Then when my battery is at 23-25% it will suddenly go down to 1% and my phone goes off (a recurring problem now, happens every single day).
Today two things happened. My phone went blank. I was getting calls but couldn’t answer, I couldn’t force shut down, this continued for an hour or so. Then suddenly the screen came back and the phone made an SOS call on its own. After that I put my phone on charge. When I lost the screen, battery was at 48% when it came back it was at 68% !!! Then as the phone was charging it reached 88% and then said accessory not supported and stopped charging! Then I had to unplug and plug in the charger into the phone again and it started charging normally. I have spent the better part of my day trying to resolve these issues! Please help!! — Hafsa Shaikh
Solution: Hi Hafsa. After some time, an operating system like iOS may get confused when it comes to reading true battery levels so it’s best if you can help it recalibrate itself. If you’re lucky and the problem does not involve a hardware malfunction like a battery failure, battery recalibration, and at most, a full restore, may fix the issue.
To re-calibrate your iPhone’s battery, kindly do the following steps:
- Drain the battery completely. This means using your device until it powers down by its own and the battery level reads 0%.
- Charge the phone until it reaches 100%. Be sure to use original charging equipment for your iPhone and let it charge up completely. Do not unplug your device for at least two more hours and also don’t use it while charging.
- After the elapsed time, unplug your device.
- Perform a warm restart by holding the Power and Home buttons simultaneously until the Apple logo appears.
- Use your iPhone until it completely ran out of power again.
- Repeat steps 1-5.
If your phone continues to act erratically, do a full restore to take care of any possible iOS bug.
- Create a backup of your files. You can do that in a number of ways but the fastest and most effective way is by using iTunes in your PC or Mac. If you don’t want to create a backup at all, you can simply erase everything on the phone by following the steps in this link.
- Connect your iPhone to your computer with the cable that came with your phone.
- We assume you remember your phone’s passcode so simply enter it when you’re prompted for it.
- Select your iPhone once iTunes asks you for the specific device.
- Once you’re in the Summary panel or screen, select the option that will restore your device (Restore).
- Confirm by clicking on Restore button.
- Wait for a few moments while iTunes restores your device to its factory settings. It may also take some time if iTunes will need to install an updated operating system version.
- After this factory reset, all software settings should be restored to their defaults.
Your aim in doing the two procedures above is to see if the problem is being caused by a software glitch. If your iPhone’s erratic behavior continues though, that suggests that it’s suffering from a hardware fault. In this case, you need to send it in so it can be checked by a trained technician.
Problem 3: iPhone 6 has multiple issues due to hardware malfunction, slow performance issue
Hi there ! Thanks for the free service 🙂 my phone was stolen and later found in shambles. I took it in for repairs and since then, my thumb print doesn’t work. The Home button works most times but other times takes 5-12 pushes to just light up the phone again. But this only happens 1-6 times a day, and the rest of the time lights up with 1 push.
Other glitches include the phone totally slowing down once the battery’s low, like glitching out bad , can’t even type everything, just slows right down.
The other problems are the face camera clicks like 20 times for 1 photo, still takes 1 photo but clicks a bunch and the last issue I noticed is in some apps the touch screen takes several taps in certain areas to register. So overall acting super glitchy. I have taken it back several times to the guy who fixed it. He has gotten me to do a bunch of upgrades and plug it in to iTunes to start it all over. Solution: Hi Jenny. We want to make one point clear here. We’re not here to give hope. We want to help but they are mainly for software issues. If a technician already tried to ask you to do a bunch of things, which most probably includes a full factory reset (Restore) and the problem still persists, there must be something in the hardware that causes the device to become glitchy in a lot of aspects. If your phone has been physically impacted or dropped for example, the motherboard may had been damaged. The technician should have told what the true status of the device is the moment it left his/her shop.
The rule of thumb when it comes to smartphone troubleshooting is simple — exhaust all software troubleshooting and if that won’t work, then bad hardware must be to blame. When it comes to iPhone troubleshooting, the most that a user can do is to perform a factory reset. Should the issue remains after that, he/she must consult Apple so the device can be fixed or replaced.
Since Apple will most likely refuse to service your phone at this time since they’ll already consider the hardware tampered with, your only option is to bring it back to the technician who initially fixed the phone. Get an honest assessment and if he/she will say that the phone is hopeless, it probably is the case. The symptoms you mention here are all consistent with multiple functions not working properly, which suggests that there must be a general hardware failure going on. Such a case can only be fixed by motherboard replacement (and probably a Home button replacement if this piece is damaged too), which can cost upwards of $200. If you think a battered phone like your iPhone 6 is worth that money for an unguaranteed repair, go ahead. Otherwise, it’s more practical for you to simply save up some and get an upgraded iPhone 7, or a working pre-owned iPhone 6.
