Hello and welcome to yet another #iPhone7 post. Today, we cover 5 power/boot-related questions sent to us by some members of our community. We hope our answers will help not only those mentioned in this post but others who may be experiencing similar troubles.

When describing your issue, please be as detailed as possible so we can easily pinpoint a relevant solution. If you can, kindly include the exact error messages you are getting to give us an idea where to start. Below are specific topics we’re bringing for you today:
Problem 1: Wet iPhone 7 stuck in boot loop
After putting my phone on the charger, the phone boots to the standard black Apple logo on white background for anywhere between 5 and 8 seconds. It then cuts to a black, backlit screen for 2 to 3 seconds, and then shuts off for 2 to 3 seconds, before restarting the loop at the Apple logo again. It will continue this loop, independent of external power source, until the battery drains and requests charging again. Upon charging the phone, it repeats the aforementioned. I have already performed two successful DFU mode restorations, to no avail, implying (to me at least) that it’s a hardware issue. The phone has been exposed to water, and my charger shows ever-so-slight burns from moisture despite the phone having been dried out as much as possible, so there could be water damage. No harsh drops, so I don’t expect shock damage to be an issue. — Cameron Michael Wethly
Solution: Hi Cameron. If your iPhone was working normally before it got wet, the current problem is most probably due to water damage of the motherboard or battery. We know an iPhone 7 has water resistance protection but apparently that might not be enough to prevent water or moisture from leaking inside. Since you’ll be unable to fix broken hardware with software solution, we suggest that you let a professional take a look. The phone may still be saved after the internal components and the main board are dried. If it happens that the battery may had been shorted, replacement may fix the issue.
Try to bring your phone to Apple service center first. If that’s not possible, you can tap independent service centers who handle wet electronics.
Problem 2: iPhone 7 battery power drains fast
While my phone is on a charger, it goes up to 26% and then starts going down again very fast. Goes down 1% every minute even without me using it. I have to unplug it and plug it back in and it goes back up to 26%. I’ve done that a few times. Now it went back to 24% and won’t go up or down. Stuck at 24%. Just started having this problem a few minutes ago. It’s an iPhone 7plus. Only 4 months old. — Amanda Poynor
Solution: Hi Amanda. Was the phone accidentally dropped or exposed to water or elements before? If it was, stop whatever you’re trying to do and just bring it to Apple for service.
However, if you never did drop the phone nor got it wet before, there may be a software bug causing the problem. Try to see if you’ll be able to fix the problem by recalibrating the battery. It’s quite simple so we hope it will work for you. Here’s how to do that:
- Drain the battery completely. This means using your device until it powers down by its own and the battery level reads 0%.
- Charge the phone until it reaches 100%. Be sure to use original charging equipment for your iPhone and let it charge up completely. Do not unplug your device for at least two more hours and also don’t use it while charging.
- After the elapsed time, unplug your device.
- Perform a warm restart by holding the Power and Home buttons simultaneously until the Apple logo appears.
- Use your iPhone until it completely ran out of power again.
- Repeat steps 1-5.
Battery calibration should retrain the operating system in detecting the true levels of the battery. Sometimes, iOS gets confused in getting the correct battery levels so a battery calibration is useful in fixing it.
If the issue remains after battery calibration though, you should then wipe the phone clean. Here’s how:
- Open Settings
- Tap General.
- Tap Reset.
- Tap Erase All Content and Settings.
- If prompted, enter your passcode.
- Tap Erase iPhone.
Make sure that you create a backup of your personal files in iTunes or iCloud or both before wiping the phone. Once your iPhone has been reset, observe how it works for 24 hours without installing on it. We except that charging and battery behaviors should return to normal. If that’s not happening, something must be wrong with the hardware. In that case, you’ll want to send the phone in so it can repaired or replaced.
Problem 3: iPhone 7 stuck in flashing logo screen
Hi. My iPhone 7 is stuck on flashing logo screen. I have connected it to iTunes and set it in recovery mode but it is not showing up on my computer – iMac. Please help. Many thanks. — David
Solution: Hi David. Try the steps below. Basically you’ll want to see if you can do a recovery even when you can’t boot it to recovery mode. Make sure that iTunes is running the latest update.
- In your computer, close all active apps.
- Open iTunes.
- Turn off your iPhone. If you can’t turn it off normally, let the battery drain to 0% so the phone powers down on its own. Charge the phone for at least an hour without attempting to turn it on.
- Connect your iPhone to the computer via USB cable.
- Press and hold the Power button for at least 3 seconds.
- Press and hold the Volume Down button on the left side of the iPhone while continuing to hold the Power button. Be sure to hold both Power and Volume Down keys for 10 seconds. If Apple logo appears at this time, repeat steps 5 and 6. Apple logo should not show at all.
- Continue to hold Volume Down key for another 5 seconds. If the Plug into iTunes screen is displayed, repeat steps 5-7. Plug into iTunes screen should not show up.
- You’ll know that your phone is in DFU mode if the screen remains black. Your computer should then tell you that iTunes has detected an iPhone.
- Follow the on-screen steps in your computer to do a full recovery.
Recovery via DFU mode is the ultimate troubleshooting step that you can do in this case. If your phone remains unresponsive or stuck, contact Apple support.
Problem 4: iPhone 7 won’t turn on, no power issue
My iPhone was working ok when I went to work today. I was playing on my phone on my lunch break when a message came on my phone saying 5 percent battery left on my phone. before break my phone lost all power. i put my phone on charge at 1.30 and I went back at the end of shift at 4.30 and my phone was still dead and wouldn’t turn. — Connorfrantas
Solution: Hi Connorfrantas. In most cases such as yours, the culprit is bad hardware so there’s a chance this will end up with repair or replacement. Before you decide to contact Apple support, these are the things that you can try:
- Press and hold the power button for at least 10 seconds. This will verify if indeed the phone fails to turn on.
- Repeat step number 1 when the phone is connected to a charger. Sometimes, a battery can lose total energy in its circuit for some reason but leaving the device charged for at least an hour may revive it.
- Check the phone for signs that it still powers on such as charging or LED indicator, vibration, or sound.
- Try using another known working Apple charger. For an issue such as yours, it’s very important to check the possibility that the charger may be to blame. If you have another Apple device or iPhone, make sure that you use its charger to charge your iPhone 7.
- Check the charging port if there’s any telltale sign of damage such as bent pins. A bad charging port will obviously not allow normal charging so after the battery has drained all power, the phone may be unable to charge because due to a bad charging port.
Remember, if all these things won’t fix the problem, you must let Apple or an independent service center check the device.
Problem 5: iPhone 7 won’t turn on after waking up the screen
I was charging my phone, and when I woke up it, it had a black screen. I tried restarting it using the power button and down volume. I have a iphone 7 plus for less than a year. There is no liquid damage or have damage from dropping the phone. I also I tried charging it for an hour. Still a black screen. I also tried plugging it into iTunes but it does not pop up on iTunes either. I do not know the IOS version. — Katherine Wolfe
Solution: Hi Katherine. Your issue may be similar to Connorfrantas above so make sure that you try all our suggestions for him. As mentioned, a lot of issues like the one you’re experiencing can be caused by hardware malfunction. Since you’re limited to performing software troubleshooting, there’s no way you’ll be able to fix this issue on your end unless you are trained to diagnose and fix iPhone 7 hardware problems.
