iPhone 7 won’t detect any wifi network, wifi stopped working, no IP address, other issues

Problem 1: iPhone 7 gets roaming charges overseas

I’ve been overseas twice and both times i’m being charged roaming and my provider says i must change my network preferences on my phone to GSM… or 3G but i can’t find network preferences on my phone. My cellular data is set to 3G and not LTE. — Sandra

Solution: Hi Sandra. First of all, your issue involves some billing-related concern so your service provider must be the one to help you figure out the problem. We barely know your device and account history so there’s very little to nothing that we can do about your concern. Telling us that you’re being charged for a service you don’t want does not really help us identify where the issue lies. This is a one-way communication and the only way we can provide an effective response is when you give us as many details as possible in one go. For this reason, we strongly recommend that you continue to work with your carrier’s technical support team why they’re charging you extra and how to prevent it in the future.

Secondly, we don’t think changing network preferences will prevent you from incurring roaming charges at all. We don’t know the logic why your carrier will provide that advise if your main purpose is not to get charged. Switching from 4G LTE to 3G won’t necessarily turn off your mobile data service abroad. You’re simply opting for an outdated, slower network to access the internet. But then again, we don’t know how your system is set up and how roaming in your device works so kindly contact your carrier. There’s no better party that can help you for this trouble than them.

Problem 2: iPhone 7 wifi stopped working, no IP address

Hi. My iPhone was working perfectly until two days ago. I left it on during the night. In the morning, the wifi was disconnected and would not reconnect to my home network. Tried different location, still the same. It finds the network but the IP address is not there. Have tried rebooting number of times. Reset the network,  on and off the mobile data and airplane mode number of times. No luck. Can you please help? As I am on holiday at the moment cannot visit Apple shop until I get back. — Nelkysimo

Solution: Hi Nelkysimo. For minor network issues, resetting the network settings (Settings>General>Reset>Reset network settings) usually does the trick but if you’ve already tried it before contacting us, there may be a serious reason for the problem.

Install iOS and app updates

To kick off your device troubleshooting, we suggest that you an update. Make sure that the install the latest available iOS version. Hardware makers like Apple and its affiliate manufacturers that create chips like the modem in your phone sometimes release fixes and improvements together with iOS updates. If you’re lucky and the issue is caused by a known bug, an iOS update may fix it easily.

Some third party apps can sometimes cause problems with others apps and with the operating system. To minimize such problem, you also want to ensure that you only install apps that are up-to-date. iOS devices are set to automatically download and install app updates. If you changed this setting before, make sure that you revert the original setup to allow your device to install updates even without your intervention.

Do a full restore

If nothing changes after installing all updates, or if your device is already running the latest iOS and app versions, you should not hesitate to do a factory reset, also known as a full restore. Because you’re dealing with a possible software glitch, full restore is a must-do step.

  1. Create a backup of your files. You can do that in a number of ways but the fastest and most effective way is by using iTunes in your PC or Mac. If you don’t want to create a backup at all, you can simply erase everything on the phone by following the steps in this link.
  2. Connect your iPhone to your computer with the cable that came with your phone.
  3. We assume you remember your phone’s passcode so simply enter it when you’re prompted for it.
  4. Select your iPhone once iTunes asks you for the specific device.
  5. Once you’re in the Summary panel or screen, select the option that will restore your device (Restore).
  6. Confirm by clicking on Restore button.
  7. Wait for a few moments while iTunes restores your device to its factory settings. It may also take some time if iTunes will need to install an updated operating system version.
  8. After this factory reset, all software settings should be restored to their defaults.

Problem 3: iPhone 7 won’t detect any wifi network

I have an iPhone 7 that will not connect to wifi at all. I stay in a student campus housing with multiple close wifi routers available and the phone will not bring up the option to connect to any of them. It’s not that the phone won’t connect; it’s the fact that no available routers will display when turning on the wifi option. My Bluetooth options didn’t display either until the 10.3 update and then I was able to start seeing devices again for Bluetooth but wifi still wasn’t able to find anything. I’ve reset everything imaginable and even updated to the newest software. IF YOU CAN…HELP ME PLEASE! — Terrell

Solution: Hi Terrell. We suggest that you wipe the phone clean first to see how wifi works. This will ensure that your device runs the latest iOS version and there are no third party apps in the system that may cause this problem. Here’s how:

  1. Open Settings app.
  2. Tap General.
  3. Tap Reset.
  4. Tap Erase All Content and Settings.
  5. If prompted, enter your passcode.
  6. Tap Erase iPhone.

Before you do the steps above, make sure that you back irreplaceable files to iTunes or iCloud first.

Once you’ve erased the phone and set it up again, run wifi and see how it works. Make sure that you don’t install anything before testing the wifi function.

If your phone still won’t detect any wifi network, that means that there’s a hardware malfunction involved. It may be a bad antenna or a malfunctioning networking chip. Either case, you want to let a professional check the phone. Bring your iPhone to an Apple service center so it can be checked. If that’s not possible, let an independent technician handle the hardware service.

Problem 4: iPhone 7 modem/router crashes when opening an app

I bought an iPhone 7 two days ago. I did a restore from a backup and connected to my home WiFi. Each time I open an app or browser, the router/modem crash. The ISP (Spectrum aka Time Warner) has been utterly useless, as has Apple. HELP!        — Brad

Solution: Hi Brad. We are not aware of any iOS bug that can cause a third party equipment like a modem or router to crash but if that’s what is happening, then you must do some drastic solutions.

First of all, you want to make sure that you isolate the problem to your iPhone device. If you have other devices connected to your home wifi, on the same local network serviced by your modem/router, try to see if the same problem occurs when you access the internet. If the modem/router won’t crash when using another device, then you should focus your troubleshooting on your iPhone 7.

If, on the other hand, the modem/router also crashes when you access the internet on a second or other devices, that’s not iOS or iPhone issue at all. There must be a bug or malfunction in the router so you’ll have to work with your carrier (Spectrum) to fix it. It may be a pain to talk to their customer support team but you really have no choice. The worst case scenario may be a modem replacement.

Secondly, iPhone or iOS issues, as long as they don’t involve hardware problems, are fixable in your level. Sometimes, old or incompatible third party apps can lead to problems so it’s best if you refrain from restoring from old backups. Instead, we want you to erase the phone completely by doing the following first:

  1. Open Settings app.
  2. Tap General.
  3. Tap Reset.
  4. Tap Erase All Content and Settings.
  5. If prompted, enter your passcode.
  6. Tap Erase iPhone.

After you’ve cleaned the phone, manually install apps that you need. Avoid installing apps that you don’t use often. Make this a habit to minimize problems. Keep in mind that the more apps you install, the more the chances of conflicts with the operating system and apps become.
