The #iPhone6s and the #iPhone6sPlus have just been announced by #Apple at a dedicated event at San Francisco. So what’s exactly new with the new iPhones? Well, the company is now using a more stronger build of aluminum and an improved glass panel covering the display. This means you can expect improved durability from the two smartphones.
What’s 3D Touch?
This is nothing but Apple’s rebranding of the popular Force Touch feature that’s seen on the new gen MacBooks. Thanks to a series of sensors embedded under the display, users can apply a certain amount of pressure on the display to do certain tasks.
For example, force touching the edge of the display will show you the recently opened apps list (alternative to double tapping the home button), which is a handy shortcut to have. There are several other shortcuts that will be available for the users. Apps like Facebook and Instagram have 3D Touch enabled by default now, so the feature has already been baked into third party apps.
The new Apple A9
Also new is the processor underneath, known as the Apple A9. This chipset is said to be 70% faster compared to the Apple A8 from the iPhone 6 and 90% faster in performing GPU tasks over the iPhone 6. As rumored, the company is using a 12-megapixel camera sensor on the back, which is a major shift from the 8-megapixel sensors that we’ve seen in previous iPhone models.
Interestingly, this is for the first time since the iPhone 4s back in 2011 that Apple has managed to increase the megapixel count on its camera. The sensor is capable of shooting 4K videos now, which might take up a lot of space on your device. There’s a 5-megapixel front facing camera, which is also an improvement over the predecessor.
As for the software side of things, Apple is touting the arrival of the animated wallpapers as seen on the Apple Watch. This could be an iOS 9 feature, which means that even the iPads might get them when the update is sent out soon.
Pricing and Availability
The company has also introduced a new color variant of the iPhone, called the Rose Gold. Pricing of the two new iPhones have been unchanged and the iPhone 6s will start from $199 (16GB) while the iPhone 6s Plus will start from $299.
As for the older iPhones, the iPhone 5s will now be offered for free on contract, with the iPhone 6 seeing a drop to $99 and the iPhone 6 Plus also seeing a drop to $199. Bear in mind that these are just the contract prices of the smartphone and it will change depending on the storage variant. All models of the iPhone 6s and the 6s Plus can be pre-ordered from September 12 and will be available for purchase starting September 25.
