Apple Is Preparing “Jetsons Style” Home Automation

We may know Apple as the company for giving us the iPhone and the iPad however its latest plan will make us rethink the way we look at the company. According to a report the company is going to introduce a smart home concept at the upcoming Worldwide Developers Conference which will be held this coming June 2 to 6 in San Francisco.

The company envisions a Jetsons-style future where homes can be controlled using an iPhone. Everything from lights, security systems, to home appliances will soon be remotely controlled using an iOS device.

It’s no surprise that Apple would want to enter in this line of business as its rival Google has acquired Nest Labs last February, a company that creates internet-connected thermostats and sensors. Even Samsung is entering the home automation business with its introduction of the Smart Home range of appliances such as refrigerators, TV’s, and washing machines which can be controlled by Galaxy smartphones and smartwatches.

The Financial Times reports that “Apple’s integrated system will make it easier to set up and control new “smart home” devices. For example, a home’s lights might automatically come on when the owner enters the house, using their iPhone to wirelessly signal their arrival.” The company will use its technology which was patented last November 2012 called “System and method of determining location of wireless communication devices/persons for controlling/adjusting operation of devices based on the location.”

Details regarding this system are still few however it appears that house lights would automatically turn on as soon as a person nears his or her home with the iPhone in the pocket. It also appears that Apple is already in talks with several manufacturers to have their smart devices certified by Apple so that it works seamlessly with the company’s system.

If this home automation system pushes through then a family who will use it will be getting iPhone’s for each member of the family which could increase the sales of the company’s smartphone.

While the smart home market is still very small the entry of Apple could make it bigger since the company is known for creating products that “just work”.
