BlackBerry Chief Executive Officer Thorsten Heins revealed on Tuesday that the recently released BlackBerry devices are making waves in the United Kingdom, exceeding the company’s initial expectation.
Heins unveiled the company’s new BlackBerry 10 platform last Thursday together with the first two devices powered by the new operating system – the full touch Z10 and the QWERTY smartphone Q10. During the event, the company also announced that they will be changing their name from Research In Motion to BlackBerry.
The Z10 device was released in UK on Thursday in both black and white editions. Heins said that they expected that the new devices will appeal to long-time BlackBerry users, but they were surprised with the numbers of customers who moved from other platforms to BlackBerry.
Heins said: “It’s beyond expectations. White is sold out already. The black is hard to stock up again. It’s very encouraging. I won’t share the number because I need to verify it, but we are getting a substantial number of users moving from other platforms to BlackBerry. That is an interesting data point.”
However, Heins expressed disappointment with the fact that their new devices will not be available in the United States until mid-March because of the rigid testing systems of the different phone carriers.
Talking about the delay, Heins said: “We need to respect that. Am I a bit disappointed? Yeah, I would be lying saying no. But it is what it is and we’re working with all our carrier partners to speed it up as much as we can.”
BlackBerry’s share surged to 15 percent on Monday, but Heins said that one of their main goals is to retake their market share in the United States, which is currently dominated by Apple and Android-powered devices. Heins reiterated that BlackBerry will be aggressive in the US to win the market share again.
