How To Fix Common iPhone 5 Problems

Welcome to our first part in what might become a series of articles on fixing common iPhone 5 problems. Although this isn’t the latest model from Apple a lot of people all over the world are still using it. It is generally a stable device with few problems however just like any other electronic equipment it does suffer from some issues. iPhone 5 Does Not Charge On Specific PC

Problem: My iPhone 5 is not seen by my work PC and thus does not charge. It also does not charge when plugged into the USB hub ports built into the monitor, there is no USB cable between the workstation. The same lightning cable works when plugging into a wall charger, my car’s USB port, and my home computer. The work computer does not have iTunes installed, nor can I get authorization to install that. The same USB ports on the workstation work for my wireless mouse receiver and thumb drives. Apple iPhone shows up in the Control Panel Autoplay applett, and it makes no difference as to which option is selected. A coworker has her iPhone 4 / 4s (not sure which) plugged into her workstation and it charges. The workstations are identical.

Solution: This could already be a problem with the PC and not the iPhone 5. The most likely reason is that the USB hub that you are using does not provide the minimum amount of current needed to charge the device. This is usually the case when you try to connect your phone while other devices are also plugged into the hub. Try using the USB hub with nothing but your phone connected and see if it charges.

iPhone 5 No Text Alert Sound

Problem: I don’t get the sound alert for incoming texts. I get texts so infrequently, that it’s hard to pin down any cause/effect. The phone will vibrate, not play the configured alert tone. The phone does play the correct ringtone for inbound calls. It’s set to vibrate both when on silent and not. If I test the tone in the sound settings, it will not play. Do a full reboot of the phone and now the text alert tone will play. Then when I next get a text, it does not. I have in the past tested with different tones, both custom and built-in, to no effect.

Solution: Try to go to Settings-General-Reset and then select “Reset All Settings” then check the sound of your ringtones. If they play normally then send yourself a text message and see if the alert sound issue gets corrected. If not then you might want to do a factory reset on your device. Make sure to backup all of your important data first.

  • Make sure the iPhone is off.
  • Insert the USB cable, then hold the Home key while connecting the iPhone to iTunes.
  • On the computer, when prompted that iTunes has detected the iPhone in recovery mode, click OK.
  • Click Restore iPhone
  • Click Restore and Update.
  • iTunes will begin to restore your iPhone.
  • Restore has completed successfully.

If this doesn’t solve the issue then we could be looking at a faulty hardware and in which case you should bring your device to the nearest Apple Store to have it checked.

iPhone 5 Unable To Connect To Wi-Fi When Away From Home

Problem: My iPhone 5 refuses to connect to any Wi-Fi network while I’m away from home. I’m able to connect to and use my home Wi-Fi network without any problems. However, when I’m at Starbucks, traveling, work, etc., I’m unable to connect to any Wi-Fi network. I’ve taken the following troubleshooting steps without success:

1) Initially, I reset network settings thinking this would be a quick fix. No success.

2) I then deleted all backups on iCloud (to rule out a corrupt backup being the cause, performed a new backup to iCloud, and then performed a deep restore to iOS 7.1.1 via iTunes recovery mode.

I’m still unable to connect to any Wi-Fi network besides my home network. Any advice on how to remedy this would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Solution: Try doing a hard reset on your device and see if that solves the issue. The steps are indicated on the previous problem. Make sure to backup all your information first before performing the procedure. Also, have tried waiting for the login prompt when connecting to a public network?

iPhone 5 Screen Non-Responsive When Charging

Problem: Recently I’ve noticed that while charging my iPhone 5 the screen becomes unresponsive. I have to hit the sleep button just to be able to slide to unlock and sometimes while typing the screen will just stop responding. Has anyone else experienced this?

Solution: If it only happens when charging then the possible cause is the charger used or the power source it is plugged into. Try using a different charger or try plugging it to another power source. Several other owners of this device who have experienced this problem say that this happens to them when using a particular charger. As much as possible only use chargers that come from Apple so that no compatibility issues will arise.

iPhone 5 Charging Port Problem

Problem: I will be venturing to the Genius Bar tomorrow unfortunately. For the past couple of months, my chargers have not been working properly. It started small, where I had to position the chord and the phone a certain way to charge, and then it got worse. Now I have to put pressure on the charger and hope it sticks. My phone will constantly vibrate (like how it does when you plug it in), and then sometimes tell me the device is not compatible. I just hope it doesn’t cost an arm and a leg for this…I wish I just had an upgrade to burn! Wish me luck!

Solution: One possible cause of this is that the charging contacts on your phone or charger may be dirty. Try cleaning it first with a toothpick as dust may have accumulated. Make sure that you are not using a USB hub as this may not supply the required power needed to charge your device.

iPhone 5 iTunes Question

Problem: I’m thinking of adding a line to my account to get an Iphone 5 but i was wondering is it mandatory that you have to use itunes or can I get by with never using it?

Solution: Having iTunes in your computer is not necessarily a requirement. However, without iTunes you will not enjoy the full potential of your device since you won’t be able to access certain features.

iPhone 5 FaceTime Is Missing

Problem: facetime has disappeared from iPhone in the last 7 days before the last iOS update – have done update and still not there?

Solution: To solve this issue try to reboot your device first by pressing the Home and Power button until you see the Apple logo. Now go to your settings and look for FaceTime. If you see it then proceed to Settings > General > Reset > Reset Home Screen Layout and check your home screen if you can see the app.

iPhone 5 Activation Instructions

Problem: Hi, I’ve recently purchased an iPhone 5 and would like help on how to activate the device.

Solution: If you have bought an unlocked device then listed below are the steps to follow.

Activate using Wi-Fi

You will need your iPhone and a Wi-Fi network. Hold the On/Off button and follow the onscreen instructions.

Activate using iTunes

If you don’t have access to a Wi-Fi network then you can use iTunes. You will need your phone, the latest version of iTunes, and your Apple ID. Connect your device to your computer and iTunes will guide you through activation.

iPhone 5 Cannot Connect to iTunes

Problem: i sent in my iphone 5 for “iPhone 5 Sleep/Wake Button Replacement Program” due to unresponsive power button. On 4th July 2014, i was notified to collect a new IP 5.  This Ip 5 comes with the latest iOS version: 7.1.2 But sadly, When i try to activate iTunes on the new iPhone 5 with my Apple ID, It failed with the message: “Cannot connect to iTunes Store, try again”. So i went home thinking probably the service center’s internet is weak. However, when i reach home with internet connected, I tried to activate n times: i tried my Id, my wife’s ID, my brother’s ID, my father’s ID, all failed with the same error message.  I am sure my ID/password is fine because i can activate on my Wife’s ip 5.   I tried reset the phone multiple times, i tried restore with my previous backup, all failed to active iTunes. Hence, as of 7 July 2014, i drop my phone to the service center again. They too face the face issue. And they need few days to troubleshoot.  I start to wonder, whether is there anything else i could do apart from the above?

Solution: It looks like you have done everything possible that could be done on your end. Most of the time for problems like this a reset would have solved the issue but in your case it hasn’t. Let’s just wait for the diagnosis of the technicians over at the service center.

iPhone 5 No Service After Software Update

Problem: I recently did a software update on my Iphone 5 the other day. The software update was 7.1.2. After doing the software update my phone is not able to find service. I know for 100% that we have service in my area because the rest of my family has service on their phones. We have Verizon Wireless as our cell provider. What should i do? Can i go to verizon and will i be able to get a new phone. I really don’t want to take out the SIM card because i have a lifeproof case and its a hasle to take on and off… But if that’s the only way i guess ill have to…

Solution: Have you tried erasing your device and setting it up as a new device? Make sure to backup all your data first before performing the procedure. Make sure to turn of iMessage as well by going Settings > Messages > iMessage.

Erase device: tap Settings > General > Reset > Erase All Content and Settings.

Setup as new device: Complete the setup assistant. When prompted to set up your device, select Set Up as New iPhone then follow the on-screen instructions.
